Moreland Zebra Womens Match Report
Moreland Zebras Women 5 def 1 Truganina Hornets
Yesterday saw our senior women playing Truganina Hornets away on their synthetic pitch. The two teams met only 4 weeks ago and resulted in a 1-1 draw. The Zebras were quick off the mark with Georgia Kennedy opening the scoring after just ten minutes with a well taken strike. The Zebras dominated the first half with young players Brianna & Ashley working very hard. Last year’s top goalscorer Pauline Xerri added another goal five minutes later making it 2-0. Both Pauline and Georgia were busy making runs at the Hornets’ defence causing all kinds of problems. The Zebras knocked the ball around looking for openings and in the 30th minute Georgia Kennedy struck home again for her second goal. Shortly after the Hornets pushed forward and were awarded a free kick outside the penalty area. The Hornets’ player chipped over the wall with new keeper Fatima saving the first effort but could do nothing with the rebound with the Hornets scoring. Half time 3-1
The second half began with the Zebras’ trying our other new keeper, Claudia Wyatt in goal. The second half began with the Hornets pressing the Zebras’ midfield pushing forward but good work by Hannah De Lorenzis and Emmie Gattellaro in midfield kept them in check. The Zebras again pushed forward and were causing all types of problems for the Hornets’ defence and it wasn’t long before new striker Georgia Kennedy scored again to make it 4.1
The Zebras’ defence was well marshalled by captain Celeste Gallina along with Kristen Cindric and was well organised throughout the game. The Zebras played possession football creating many more chances and several corners and not long after Georgia Kennedy bobbed up to score her fourth goal. The game finished 5-1 by a much improved and fitter Zebras team. Both new keepers Fatima and Claudia played their first game for the Black & Whites and were rarely tested in goal.
Senior coach Stephan Achilleos was pleased with his side’s playing performance at the stage of preseason and is looking forward to improvement as we move forward. Stephan was happy how the team has moulded together and also happy with player versatility giving him many options.
A special thank you to Truganina Hornets for their hospitality once again.
