MFC Club Patron 2015 - European Cup Legend...Willie Wallace
At MFC's recent AGM the club patron for Season 2015 was announced. Many club members will be unaware that many of our Premier League games are attended by footballing royalty. Some of you however will know that I am referring to Willie Wallace. Willie played as a striker in the 1967 Celtic side from Scotland that was the first British team to win the European Cup defeating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. Willie had scored twice in the Semi Final to ensure Jock Stein's men advanced. The European Cup win was achieved before any of the big English clubs, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal etc. Willie also played with other big clubs like Hearts in the Scottish 1st Division and Crystal Palace in the English top flight.
Willie was also a capped Scottish International and famously played in the side that defeated England 3-2 at Wembley (England at the time were the reigning World Champions having just lifted the trophy in 1966) and the Celtic team that defeated Real Madrid 1-0 at the Bernabeu in front of 120,000 fans. Willie was a goal scoring machine having amassed over 250 goals in his professional career.
Willie and his wife, Olive, have now lived in Australia for over 30 years and currently live on the southern end of the Gold Coast. Willie has really taken to our proud little club and he has been an enormous support to our committee and serves as an inspiration to all of us who come together to play and support the game. Currently MFC is fortunate enough to have Willie advising the committee on our recent Junior Academy venture which we hope to launch in the New Year. Attached is a you tube link to some of the highlights of the great Willie Wallace. We thank you Willie and appreciate just how fortunate our small club is to have such a legend of the game on board at MFC.
