Co-Curator of the oval, Bart Jaques, gives us an update on ground preparation for the upcoming visit by the GWS Giants and for season 2015.
For those who may not remember, at this time last year, the Club was facing a visit from AFL Club GWS Giants in mid December. What people may not have realized was that the ground was already showing signs of malnourishment due to lack of rain.
To ensure that the visit from GWS was not destined for failure the Club, with assistance from Sunshine Coast Council undertook to present the playing surface to a standard worthy of a satisfactory playing service.
GWS finally arrived and the weeks stay proved to be a success, due in a large part to assistance from Council and volunteers from the Club.
The Club is pleased to report that the GWS Giants have again committed to another visit in December. The same criteria will remain and that is the condition of the playing surface.
The ground is in a far better condition this year compared to last year, which gives the Club a better start with renovations.
Next week the aeration, topdressing and fertilizing takes place along with the remodeling and returfing of the 2 goal squares plus center square. All works will depend on the ‘man up above’ along with hand and mechanical watering.
Also the track and Farmers Market areas have received a make over with reshaping and rolling to cover the potholes developed over the winter.
The Club is also hopeful of starting drainage around the ‘v’ drain prior to next season.
Funding and plans have been approved for the erection of a secured playground to be completed prior to December.
All in all a very productive off-season is proposed which, we trust, will be of great benefit to the Club.
