The Western Magpies Reserves Best and Fairest Award, the JB Medal , will likely be a three way battle between midfielder Bryce Crossley, half back Todd Billing and CHF and Captain Sean McEvoy.
All three were named regularly in the best players throughout the season with Crossley a consistent ball winner in midfield and with good hand and foot skills setting him apart. Billing enjoyed a stellar season with consistent form in defence and good reading of the play to repel many opposition attacking moves. Both Crossley and Billing missed a number of games, with Crossley playing several senior matches and Billing breaking his hand late in the season. McEvoy was also a consistent performer, marshalling the defence and leading his side from the front all season.
(the JB Medal is named after club stalwart and Life member John Burkill, who was the heart and soul of the club in the 1970s and 1980s as head trainer and player confidant, often being at the club 7 days per week doing all the jobs needed to keep the club and players going).
The Colts B & F (The Maurie McNamee Medal) will be fought out between several consistent performers throughout the season in Matt Mazarolle, Nathan Morrow, Grant Jennings and Alex Spasovski.
Maurie McNamee was one of the founders of the club in 1957, and was the clubs first coach at junior level then coached the club’s first Senior sides when they were added to the club – he coached continuously from under 8s in 1957 through the grades to seniors to 1976.
The club fielded a womens’ team again this season and they acquitted themselves well in the second tier of competition but will be hoping to step up to the top level next year. The Best and Fairest award is the Diedre Jakavicius Medal , named after a stalwart and Life Member of the club who worked tirelessly with both the football club and social club to ensure the club’s success and was instrumental in forming the club’s first womens’ team in 2005.
