While the roos playing roster is enjoying some well-earned time off to recover their sore bodies from a long season, recently re-appointed Senior Coach Brett Maloney and his brains trust are already planning on season 2015 with a beefed up coaching panel and further depth in playing stock high on the agenda.
We caught up with Brett to go over the past couple of seasons plus also seee what's in store for the season ahead.
This will be your 3rd season at the club how are you enjoying it?
Anytime you're involved with a footy club, its hard not to enjoy it I think. The challenge of bringing a whole club together to achieve the one common goal is both exciting and immensely challenging. The club has been terrific in its support of me and what we are trying to achieve. The playing group, certainly this year, were committed to getting the best out of themselves which makes my job a little easier and very hopeful the bulk of them remain and we can get some continuity in our playing list.
What's been some of you highlights?
Without doubt the team highlight so far was making the finals and winning one this year. While to many that may seem like no big deal, but from where the club has come from recently, the 1st finals campaign in 4 years and 1st finals win in 8-9 yrs it was a small reward for all those that have put in the hard work in the continual build to elevate the club back up the ladder. The reason we play or coach or administer is to be as successful as possible, and for a very long time we were the envy of all other clubs with multiple premierships in the 70’s,80’s and 90’s with the last coming in 1996. The challenge is there for all is to work tirelessly towards returning the club to these glory days.
How do you rate season 2014?
Obviously it was pleasing to make the finals and the reason you go through 18 H & A rds is to win enough games to make finals and play in the big games. To get 2 finals games into some of our young guys will be nothing but beneficial to them. However in all honesty and for a variety of reasons I thought we were at least a week short of an “acceptable result”
What will be your focus on for season 2015... off season, pre-season, in-season?
1st we need to retain as many of our current list as possible. This will then give us an idea of our playing stocks and where the improvement in personnel needs to be. We are about bringing the right personalities to our club who fit into our needs and what we are about.
In conjunction with other coaches and staff we will then map out our pre season plan to have the team cherry ripe for rd 1. Fitness will certainly be at the top of this agenda.
Has plans for the 2015 already begun? Recruitment?
The footy world even at our level never stays idle. The phone runs pretty hot at this time of year speaking to potential recruits and your own staff.
When do you anticipate pre-season to commence?
At this stage probably early December. Looking to finalise some assistant coaching appointments at the moment and then in conjunction with them and fitness staff plan our pre xmas phase
