AFL Queensland Outstanding Long Service to the Game
It is my honour to present a very prestigious state level award. The Outstanding Long Services to the Game award is recognises an outstanding contribution to our game over a long period of service.
This person has forever left their mark on the game, through many years of selfless dedication.
This is state level award, one of only three such awards presented in Queensland amongst the thousands of volunteers in the game.
This is the second highest award, only surpassed by the AFL Merit Award, the highest award afforded in our state.
It is my honour to announce for Outstanding Long Service to the Game award, our recipient, Carey Regan.
Carey has dedicated over 43 years service to our game.
Carey started playing for West / Walkerston in 1970 when the competition started in Mackay.
In over 300 games of club and representative football, personal commendations include most improved player, best defender, leading goal kicker, Premiership player, Grand Final Best of Ground and Best and Fairest recognition.
In 1977, Carey and four others founded the Mackay City Hawks to enable an increasing number of young people an opportunity to play the game.
Carey has coached the senior club in 1984, 1993 and 1994, as well as coaching the U17’s in two premierships in 1990 and 1991.
In the mid-nineties, Carey umpired and was appointed as central umpire for the 1995 Grand Final and reserve umpire in 1996.
Carey has been a long term board member of Mackay City, director on the AFL Mackay Board and was granted AFL Mackay Life Membership in 1985.
At the beginning of the 2009 premiership season, the award for the senior grade best and fairest award was renamed, the Carey Regan Medal – recognition of the respect the football community has for Carey.
Over many years of selfless service, Carey has personified the AFL core values, Accountable, Progressive and Respectful.
Carey has forever left his mark on the game and on behalf of AFL Queensland, I would like to thank you for your services to our game.
