For the 8th year in a row the Mackay City Hawks reserves were in the Grand Final. This year it was against the swans that we defeated last year by 5 points. With the Swans Seniors being knocked out the previous week this allowed a couple of players to drop back and strengthen their team.
With conditions warm and windy the first quarter was pretty even with swans up by 7 points at quarter. The hawks were unable to make use of the strong breeze with only the 1 goal. The second quarter saw the swans get on top with the breeze and push ahead with a 20 point lead.
After Half Time the swans continued on their merry way with the hawks winning plenty of the footy but not able to trouble the scorers. At 3 quarter time it was the swans with a 38point lead and the strong breeze in the last quarter.
3-time premiership coach Gary Downes gave a passionate final address to his team asking them to give everything they had in the last quarter. The boys did just that but were unable to trouble the scorers with the Swans Being the better team all day and running out victors by 57 points.
Swans 11.6 72
Hawks 2.3 15
Goals: A Lock 2
Best: M Nicolson, N Morton, B Davis, K Archer, B Chick
The Club would like to say a big thank you to retiring Reserves Coach and Club Life Member Gary Downes who coached his final game on the weekend. In his 4 years in charge he led the Reserves to 3 premierships and 1 runner-up along with a win-loss-draw coaching record of 49W:11L:1D. Super Effort Downsey from all your mates at the Hawks.
