The final round of the season saw the Bloods take on Old Ivanhoe at our home ground of Princes Park. Although we had already been relegated to Premier C for 2015, the Bloods were looking to finish the season on a high versus an opposition whom we beat earlier in the year. Old Ivanhoe were playing for their survival in B grade needing a victory plus relying on Uni Blues to defeat Old Caulfield in order to avoid relegation.
Conditions were good and the Bloods kicked with a slight breeze in the first quarter. Our cause was not helped with first ruckman and young gun Matt Taylor being injured in the first 5 minutes of the game. However it was OHAFC who took control early with Jimmy Paul and Rhys Johnson starting well and captain Weekes providing some headaches for the Ivanhoe defence.
The first quarter produced some of the best footy we played all year and we led by 31 points at quarter time. Ivanhoe came at the Bloods hard in the 2nd quarter and at one stage kicked 5 goals in the space of 10 minutes. The Hoers gained the lead late in the 2nd qtr and maintained a 4 point margin at half time. The Bloods started the 3rd quarter similar to the first with Dawson continuing his recent good form and well assisted by Barter providing strong drive out of defence.
In a dominant display we piled on 8 goals in the quarter to lead by 39 points at 3 qtr time. Although Ivanhoe came at us hard in the last quarter, the Bloods defence held up well and we were able to kick 3 goals into the breeze to salute by 21 points. James Paul was dominant, Weekes capped off a fine month, McLauchlan was everywhere once again and Barter, Dawson and Johnson all beat their opponents on the day.
The reserves were competitive however went down by 31 points. Congratulations to club legend Sam Langford-Jones on playing his 200th game for the club and gaining life membership. The Under 19’s went down to Beaumaris by 26 points.
After the match Loewey gave an inspirational speech whereby he praised each player individually for their efforts during the season plus others who had assisted throughout the year. The club would like to take the opportunity to thank all sponsors, members and supporters for your efforts and support during the year. The preparation for 2015 has already begun and we remain fully committed to ensuring success on and off the field for next year and beyond.
