The Goannas took on Pennant Hills in the Division 1 Elimination Final at Blacktown ISP, with the season on the line for both teams.
The Goannas were confident heading in to the game having beaten the Demons in both of their meetings this season, but it was the Demons who had the better of the first quarter, adapting to the step up in intensity better than the Goannas and kicking to 4 goals to none. The situation was made worse for the Goannas with full forward Ben Rogers leaving the field with a serious finger injury.
The second quarter saw the Goannas gradually find their feet, and by the later part of the term they were starting to have the better of the game, and although the margin was still 23 points at half time there was still optimism in the team.
The third quarter saw the game open up as both teams went goal for goal. The Goannas again had the better of the play, but every challenge they put up was met by Pennant Hills, and at the last change it was back to 22 points but still there for the Goannas.
The boys knew this as well and came out firing in the last quarter, dominating the game and at one point managed to get the margin back to 3 points and were looking like they could steal the game. Pennant Hills were able to get a steadying goal and in the end they managed to hang on, winning by 12 points and ending the Goannas season.
Trent Schmutter was named best on ground with an excellent performance in the back line, with great support coming from Andrew Grogan, Andrew Munns and Sunny Gill. Jordan Pidgeon provided plenty of run, particularly during the last quarter, while Stuart McKinley did plenty of the hard in and under work.
Goannas 9.10.64 v Pennant Hills 11.10.76
With that result the season has come to an end for Holroyd Parramatta. The club would like to thank Shane Jorgensen and his coaching team for yet another successful season for the first grade team. A big thank you also needs to go out to all of the volunteers who helped through the year, and to all of the loyal supporters who came down and cheered on the blue and gold through 2014. We look forward to bigger and better things in 2015.
No Gray Medal votes given out on the weekend, they are all locked away in a safe in Western Sydney, waiting to be transported to the Merrylands RSL Club on Saturday October 18. We have to wait another 47 days until we know the winner of this prestigious award and all the other trophy winners for Season 2014. Have you got your tickets yet?
