Round 17 saw the Bloods take on Old Carey at the Carey Sports complex in Bulleen. Both sides had plenty to play for with Carey sitting in second position on the Premier B ladder and looking to secure the double chance whilst the Bloods needed a victory to be any hope of remaining in B grade in 2015.
Conditions were good and it was Carey who dominated for the first 10 minutes of the opening quarter with a number of forward moves. The opposition’s midfield were getting on top and booted the first 3 goals of the game before Gleadhill charged thru the midfield and kicked a long ball to Captain Weekes who marked strongly and goaled from 40 metres out. Soon after Nashy made his presence felt to boot the Bloods second major however game ending injuries to key players Meehan and Pinot made the challenge significantly harder. The first quarter belonged to Carey who led by 23 points at quarter time. The Bloods started well in the 2nd qtr with Weekes kicking his second goal from a set shot and Dawson and Witherow getting on top of their opponents. However Carey’s hard running off half back was difficult to contain and we allowed the opposition to kick another 7 goals for the quarter. Carey led by 46 points at the half time break and it was going to take a herculean effort by the Bloods to claw back the margin with only 2 fit players on the bench. Carey stretched the lead to 66 points at 3 qtr time however the boys fought hard in the last quarter to outscore the opposition. The final margin was a 45 point victory for Carey relegating OHAFC to C grade in 2015. Best for the Bloods was Dawson, Gooda, Gleadhill, Alkemade, Paul and Witherow who all battled hard along with Nicolopoulos who chimed in with 4 goals.
The reserves and Under 19’s were both soundly beaten.
Our last game for the season is this Saturday versus Old Ivanhoe at home. We encourage all supporters to make a special effort to attend our last game and a reminder that there are still a few spots available for the luncheon (details below).
