On Saturday 16th of August the Northern Knights travelled up the Calder Freeway to take on the Bendigo Pioneers in Round 17 of the TAC Cup. Kicking with the aid of the breeze, the Knights started quickly with Jayden Short scoring the opening goal within 37 seconds, this was followed shortly after by a strong mark and goal from Reece McKenzie. Short then kicked his second after a strong intercept mark and when McKenzie scored his second soon after the Knights were out to an 18 point lead very early in the match. After a lovely crumbing goal from Darcy Macpherson to the start the second term the Short-McKenzie combination scored three more goals and both had four each by half time. The Knights were starting to share the load well in the third quarter with goals from Kieran Malone, Matt Perry, Kyle Langford, Jade Gresham and two from Bailey Jordan to give them a 65 point lead heading into the final stanza. The Knights continued to dominate in the last quarter with McKenzie adding his fifth & sixth goals while Langford added his second and Tyrone Leonardis also got on the scoresheet allowing the Knights to run out winners by 77 points.
Sam Switkowski was again fantastic in the midfield winning a number of clearance and contested possessions while Jordan Perry in his return to the TAC Cup also collected seven clearances. Kyle Langford playing in a new role on the wing picked up 16 possessions and delivered the ball inside 50 on eight occasions, while Jayden Short & Jason Castagna provided some great run.
This Saturday 23rd August, the Knights play their last home game of 2014 against the Calder Cannons at Preston City Oval. We look forward to beating our cross town rivals and continuing our recent run of form.
