The Northern Blues Amateurs have bounced back following their one-point Round 12 loss to Albert Park with a convincing 64-point victory over Power House at Ross Gregory Oval on Saturday.
The win consolidates the Blues’ in second place on the Division 3 ladder following the 17.12 (114) to 7.8 (50) victory.
Blues’ Coach George Wakim highlighted a fast-start as a key to winning the contest against their more mature and hard-bodied opponents.
Northern responded to that call in a rampant first half that saw them take an 42-point lead into the half time interval.
That seven-goal advantage was enough to put the result beyond doubt as Power House struggled to penetrate a defence lead by Dustin Cunningham and Olsen Clark.
In the forwardline, the tall-timber of Nathan Parkes dominated the aerial contests, kicking a season best four goals for the afternoon to bring his tally to 15 for the year.
Parkes was well serviced by Tony Vuwai and Jay fellow midfielder Jay Phelan who willed themselves on the interior at the stoppages.
Vuwai and Phelan’s work was well rewarded by Captain Dean Calcedo who provided first-class run and carry on the outside to continue his fantastic spate of form.
The Blues did receive some resistance in the third term, being outscored 24-13 by a Power House unit keen to make amends for their poor first half.
However, urged on by the counter-attacking presence of Nick DeAndrade in defence, the Blues kept their opposition to just one point in a tenacious final term.
Speaking to Northern Blues Amateurs Media post-game, utility Sam Maatouk said it felt great to re-join the winner’s column after a tough fortnight on the track.
“We had two weeks to dwell on our loss to Albert Park so we just wanted to get back out there and play our brand of football,” said Maatouk.
“We know what we’re capable of when we play our best and hopefully we can play at that level for the rest of the season.”
Power House is now ninth on the ladder after Northern inflicted their third consecutive loss.
Blues next game is next Saturday against Richmond Central at Ruthven Reserve at 2:00pm.
In their Round 4 meeting with the Snakes, the Blues were defeated by 39-points at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.
In other results, the reserves and under 19’s suffered losses earlier in the day.
Daniel Wakim featured heavily for the reserves in his return from injury while Paul Steinicke was prevalent for the under 19’s.
