The Western Magpies returned to the winners list with an emphatic victory over Sandgate on Sunday, 19-11-125 to 3-8-26. The 99 point victory sees the Pies back in the five on percentage and with new... confidence going into a crucial part of the season.
The Magpies were out of the blocks from the first bounce and kicking with a blustery wind at Sandgate booted 8 first quarter goals while keeping the Seahawks to one goal.
Full forward Jordan Bain kicked 6 straight in the first quarter as he led, marked and kicked with authority and he finished with 11 goals for the match and quite possibly should have had several more but some niggles slowed him down late in the match.
Coach Glenn Humphrey was pleased with the defensive effort of his side as Sandgate were held to one goal until late in the final quarter when they added 2 late goals. The Pies held the home team scoreless when kicking with a 4-5 goal wind in the second quarter. Humphrey said it was the first time his side had played a full four quarters and the result was there for all to see.
Humphrey acknowledged the Seahawks are struggling at the moment but was also pleased with the Pies improved efficiency with the ball with much more precise kicking and handball and positive run and ability to link up which created space for the forwards which Bain was able to exploit.
The Pies had been working in training on their strategies at the stoppages and the spread with quick give with handball and to use the first option and this enabled them break quickly to open up play.
Richard Wenham returned to his best form in midfield and was supported by the consistent Ben Jaenke-Cain. Skipper Lachlan Woods was also winning plenty of the ball and initiated many attacks with good use of handball but missed the last quarter with a hand injury which will be assessed during the week.
Matt Garland played well as a hit up forward, Sean Mewing won plenty of ball across half back and Doug Lawrence and Luke Mitchell mopped up well in defence.
Jack Fox was busy up forward and his defensive pressure in his First Grade recall was good and young first gamer Brodie Easton showed good poise and decision making under pressure to indicate he will be a fine player for the Magpies in the future.
The Pies have a big three weeks with matches against PBC, Mt Gravatt and Surfers Paradise and the latter two matches are against sides in the mix for fifth spot so will be the equivalent of 8 point matches.
The match this week against PBC on the Gold Coast will be a chance for the Pies to make amends for their first round loss and consolidate fifth place on the ladder. See More
