On Sunday 29th June the Northern Knights travelled up the Hume Freeway to take on the Murray Bushrangers at Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta. Overcast and greasy conditions greeted the boys as they stepped off the bus at the ground. The opening quarter started out as a real stalemate before the first goal to the Knights through Cameron Conlon gave the game a buzz. Cameron playing in his first TAC Cup game for over 2 years was swamped by all of his teammates after kicking truly. Unfortunately the goal didn’t give the Knights the confidence boost they were after and Murray soon answered to take a one point lead at quarter time. The second term continued in much the same fashion with both sides finding it difficult to score. A good goal on the run from first gamer Michael Ercolano and a long bomb from outside 50 from Jayden Short were among few highlights for the quarter, as the teams went into the half time break deadlocked at 24 points apiece. An early goal to Murray after the interval gave them a boost but Reece McKenzie marked strongly and converted for the Knights to give them a one point lead heading into the final stanza. Both sides kept fighting hard in the last term but eventually Murray was able to win out through a couple of late goals and secure a twelve point victory. Jade Gresham fought for the Knights while Jayden Short & Zac Ballard were solid through the midfield. Bailey Jordan did a great job in defence repelling many Murray forward entries. Liam Hunt & Brayden Fiorini were both named among the Knights best on the day.
This Saturday 5th July the Northern Knights take on the Eastern Ranges at Preston City Oval in Round 13 of the TAC Cup. Hopefully the boys can turn their form around a post a victory back at home.
