The Northern Blues Amateurs defeated UHS-VU for the second time this season on Saturday, winning by 55-points in arctic conditions at Brens Oval.
Damon Marcon starred in the Northern victory, kicking seven goals in a dominant second and third quarter display that leaves him tied on 39 goals as the competition’s leading goal-kicker.
The Vulture’s began the match with a 12-point quarter time advantage, using physicality at the stoppages and a slight breeze to control possession in the tricky conditions.
However, a re-focus at the quarter time huddle assured that Northern maintained control of the contest from that point on to regain the advantage.
A five goal to one final quarter produced a flattering score-line for the Blues in the 15. 14. (104) to 6. 13. (49) result.
Midfielders Dean Calcedo and Tony Vuwai were the catalysts in that turnaround, with Calcedo playing his best game for 2014 in the clash.
The captain also provided the Blues with plenty of dash across half-back in the absence of defensive stalwart Daniel Wakim.
The electrifying back pocket is set to miss several weeks alongside co-captain Todd Beames who sustained a broken wrist.
The injuries add to a growing casualty list at the club that hosts Adrian Farchione and premiership players Brady Parke, Sam Maatouk and Ty Lehmann.
Outside of Marcon’s seven-goal haul, eight other players contributed with individual goals to round out the Northern effort.
The win stretches the Blues’ winning streak to six wins, leaving them a game clear atop the Division 3 ladder on nine wins and two losses.
The Blues next opponent is the in-form Albert Park Falcons who are currently sitting on a four game winning streak.
That match will be played at Ruthven Reserve at 2:00 this Saturday. Last time the two sides met, Northern defeated the Falcons by 91-points at Sportscover Arena.
In other results, both the reserves and under 19's suffered defeats earlier on Saturday morning.
The reserves were gallant in their 39-point loss to UHS-VU, who lead the reserves competition in first place.
Ruckman James Karanikos toiled hard all afternoon in the testing weather.
For the under 19’s, several late withdrawals resulted in an undermanned squad going down by 56-point to Yarra Valley at Ruthven Reserve.
Tyson Smith and Harley Sutton were the standouts in the loss.
