CONGUPNA FOOTBALL CLUB ROUND 10 20 June 2014
Apparently a ‘Purp’ is just a bloke who dresses up like a Violet Crumble. Now young Harry Ellis has often been described as a magician by this scribe, given his acrobatics and many trickeries in the backline, but this week he raised the bar considerably by making himself disappear! Extraordinary! Another senior debutante this week in young Heathie Barton. Could make a footballer, this kid! The TWM ensured that all minds were ‘on the job’ this week with Gonzo The Great delivering a rousing pre-match address. When the keeper said ‘Go’, DC and The Echo got stuck right in. Ferg, Joey and Bowlsie were providing plenty of run from defence. A centre clearance by The Echo saw JC gather on the flank and run to 30 to open our account. A string of dubious umpiring decisions saw the quarter largely played in our backline. Big Jack was giving our boys first use and Congo was great. Qtr time scores 1.2 to 3.5. Ferg, new to the half back line, was challenged to tighten-up. He did this, and more. DC, Tater and Barto were lively early. Moo accidentally kicked a Purp in the guts - would that be a ‘cow kick’? A 50 meter penalty took Trenna to the goal square to slot our first for the quarter. Ferg’s rebounding run found JC, who in turn found Moo for another major. The Echo burst through the pack at half forward and pumped the pill into the square, where DC quickly offloaded to Diesel for another. A centre square infringement allowed Tater to launch into the forward 50. Moo tapped forward to Diesel who put it into the goal square, where DC showed us his love of all things Brazilian, and soccered it through. A hard earned free and goal to ReeShe made it five for the quarter. Big Jack continued his dominance and JC provided many opportunities across half forward. Half time scores 6.4 to 5.7. In a brilliant individual third quarter effort, young Barto kicked three and our goal-less quarter hoodoo was extinguished forever. JC’s hard running provided the link for many forward thrusts. The on ball group of Big Jack, DC and The Echo were terrific. Tater was clocking up the k’s and was a valuable linkman. Congo was on top of the King Purp, and Ferg and Bowlsie provided much run off half back. Three quarter time scores 9.6 to 8.9. It had been tight all day and the last stanza was no different. The umpires continued to put pressure on our backline, but the boys were impassable. Play of the Day saw Bowlsie switch at half back, find Jack Lina at the visitors dug-out, on to Shanno, then Diesel, and on to Wacko, who sunk the slipper in producing a right foot banana and Goal of the Day. Never in doubt! Final scores 10.11 to 9.12. In the change rooms euphoria reigned. None happier than the girls from the Super Box.
Catch you next week …. (….when we visit the home of the Golden Cow….mmm…). ROADKILL
Reserves:
The Reserves put up a much improved effort against Nathalia last week however it was still disappointing not so come away with the win. We put together some very good passages of play but unfortunately could not put enough scoreboard pressure on them when we had our opportunities. Braden Lambert was our best player getting plenty of the ball around the ground and kicking two goals. Lucas Jefferies tried hard all day in defence and they were supported by Colin Colger, Matthew Hallahan and Alex Hall.
Under 14
Round 10 had our young guns battle for pride against an equally determined Purples. The Purps started well and again our first quarter was not our best. We are slow starters and trailed the Purps by 15 points. Our last 3/4's of footy were some of our best for the year. With the halftime break having us 11 points down, 12 points at 3/4 time and just 4 at the final bell. In slippery wet and cold conditions we managed 10 scoring shots to their 9 but only 3 goals to their 4. Our goal scorers were Reece Bartels who marked well and converted and two from Poolie who looking ominous up front, marking well and kicking truly.
Awards went to Jordie Gee (Trelly’s); Cooper Bromley (Sportsfirst); Ayden Shannon (Family Meal Voucher) is what was a scintillating game by our number 3; ‘Lord’ Noah (Drink bottle & beanie) and Bailey Talarico (Congupna Shop). The team had many stellar performances from so many players including ones from Poolie, Broph, Jaco and Fyfey. Well done lads…we are getting there. Keep working hard and enjoying your footy.

A Grade - Congupna and Nathalia were equal on points and only split by a small percentage on the ladder. So, this promised to be a tight battle. Congupna started the stronger with their defenders creating pressure, which lead to a number of turnovers. Just as Congupna started to stretch out a lead, disaster struck in the form of another serious injury. Izzy Gribben was later diagnosed with fractures in her foot. After the injury break Congupna continued to apply defensive pressure and went into the 1st ¼ ahead 15 to 9. Nathalia regrouped and came out with vigour after the break to have the better of the second ¼ and pegged Congupna’s lead back to 4 by ½ time – 26-22. The third ¼ was the same with Nathalia being slightly better and the score was 36 to 35 in favour of Congupna at ¾ time. The final ¼ saw both teams have opportunities and many turnovers as the pressure showed on each team. But while Congupna had the opportunities to win the game, it was Nathalia that got home in a tight tussle, 47-44. Best of court for Congupna was the Kelly Connor, followed by her defender team-mate Emma (Flo) Rendell.
B Grade - Well we got the win but not by the cohesive games we have played in the past. Thank goodness for a 3rd quarter blitz as apart from that each quarter was either level, 1 up or 1 down. Mickaylah and Jak in defence were superb and kept us in the game by turning over so much of Nathalia's attacking play. The goalers had to work hard against tight defenders and along with our midcourt didn't find easy options into our attack.Well done girls. Awards - Jakara (GV Hotel) and Mickaylah (Ann's Waxing)
17 and under - Well done girls on another strong win , with changes at every quarter we adapted well and continued to work as a team , some great defence work form gabby and Taylah kept the pressure on their goalers , and great drive and feeding into the ring from Eliza and Sophie kept our goalers steady, well done everyone
15 and under - Well done girls on another great win. Great to see Zoe and Emma having a go in defence and playing really well. Along with Lilly and Keeley our defenders stopped a lot of Nathalia's forward play. The attack end, with the different positional changes, also combined very well and put on a great display of goaling. Keep up the great team work girls. Awards - Emma McColl and Jess Bell
