On Sunday May 25th the Northern Knights hosted the Western Jets at Preston City Oval in Round 8 of the TAC Cup. Beautiful conditions greeted the players as they arrived although a slight breeze had picked up by the time the game was underway. The Knights were able to use any advantage the breeze might provide to great effect in the first quarter booting six goals to the Jets two. Northern‘s midfield of Switkowski, Ballard & Hunt was providing first use of the ball to the likes of Jacob Smith & Kieran Malone up forward who were looking dangerous. The Jets were then able to wrestle back some ascendancy in general play during the second quarter however the Knights battled hard and were able to kick four goals against the strengthening wind to maintain a 19 point half time lead. Unfortunately Northern failed to put their dominant third quarter performance on the scoreboard missing a number of opportunities in front of goal while Western hung in and trailed by 22 points going into the final quarter. After three quick goals to the Jets early in the last term the Knights steadied and answered with Kieran Malone kicking his third goal of the game. It wasn’t until deep into the quarter when the Jets broke the game open scoring four goals in the space of six minutes to take the lead and eventually the win by 14 points. Ryan Tester continued his great season for the Knights in defence with a best on ground performance while Sam Switkowski, Zac Ballard and Liam Hunt worked hard all day in the midfield. This Sunday 1st June the Northern Knights travel out to Shepley Oval to take on the Dandenong Stingrays in an important match for the club. Also this weekend Vic Metro takes on Western Australia in Perth and we wish our five representatives Zac Ballard, Jason Castagna, Kyle Langford, Sam Switkowski & Ryan Tester all the best as they make the trip.
