Campbelltown Monarch Blues reserves took on Moorebank Magpies in the bottom of the table clash. Moorebank were coming off an incredible win the week before after beating table topping UTS which sent shock waves throughout the competition. The Blues on the other hand came off a narrow 16 point loss to Parramatta the week before in a game that was there to be won. With both sides looking at a win this game was there for the taking.
The Blues won the toss and elected to run towards the school end to get the early advantage. The blues started with a bang as they did the previous week. The first entry inside fifty the blues set the agenda with Yzo Taking a diving mark to set the standard for the match. Quick fire goals from Charlie and Hickey saw the blues take the early lead. The first quarter saw the blues dominate possession. They had complete control of the game, two more majors from Flint and another from Charlie had the blues in pole position. The Blues domination was evident, with various clearances and with the return of Bodds in the centre along with B.Smith and Huddo the blues had the better of proceedings. Moorebank to their credit sneaked two straight goals to keep them in the hunt. At quarter time the Blues Lead 4.4.28 to Moorebank 2.0.12.
The second term took the same path as the 1st the blues maintained their domination of the game. The blues maintained possession and had numerous entries inside 50. Huddo once again was running riot with two long runs had Moorebank on the back foot. The blues Defence was epic a Mark from Roonz had to be seen to be believed as he launched himself to take the mark of the year so far. The Blues defence once again stood up as they did the previous week they kept the opposition goal less. Moorebank could only manage 3 behinds for the quarter. The Blues could have wrapped up the game in the second as they peppered the goals, yet only managed 1 goal 5 behinds. This kept Moorebank in the game at halftime 5.9.39 to 2.3.15.
The third term continued in the same vain with the blues once again dominating possession. With the weight of inside fifties mounting Moorebank could no longer hold. Yzo’s touch was timely with a mark in the pocket he faked a snap to find Fretters open who kicked a goal on his return to AFL. Yzo along with Hickey went on the kick majors to give the blues an unassailable lead going into the final term. 8.12.60 to 4.3.27.
The final term was to see no comeback. And with the blues 22 minutes from their first victory since 2012 the players knew they had done the hard yards. The final term was more of a waiting game as the Blues waited for that siren. Flint finished any hope Moorebank had of a victory with his second major of the match. To Moorebank’s credit they won the quarter kicking 2 goals to the blues 1 but the damage had been done in the first 3 quarters, the Ressis had finally achieved their first victory in 23 matches.
The walk to the change rooms was one to savour and the roar of Pain from the last 23 games was evident. From a silent change room the week before whereby the reserves heard and felt what a win sounded like they finally had their win to celebrate, and celebrate they did. How the Macquarie field’s change room ceiling is still intact nobody knows as the Blues roared through the song with Champers being sprayed all-round. And the singing didn’t stop at the club song the change room was so pumped that the singing continued, singing Happy Birthday to “Billy the Goat” Thanks goes out To Chris Jordan his coaching ability is there for all to see and with Injured players Chanta, Josh O’Brein, Seb, & Voss on hand to watch, the win was theirs to savour as much as anyone’s.
For the record the blues won 9.12.66 to Moorebank 6.3.39.
Player’s player once again went to Bodds winning his Third players player vote in as many games beating Roonz by 1 vote. Among the blues Best was L. Bodeker, L. Deering, J. Hickey, J. Quick-Nadin, N. Hudson, B. Smith with goals to C. Ford 2, D. Flint 2, J. Hickey 2, N. Hudson , N. Tyerman , C. Fretwell.
