Round 5 St Pauls V Cheltenham
SENIORS – Sponsored by Merkon Constructions
Once again it was left to our more senior players in Junior, A-Mac, Gilbo & Blackers to carry the team but too few others made enough impact to really put enough pressure on Cheltenham’s running brigade. It was only in the last half of the final term when we began moving the footy forward with any real urgency that we looked like scoring. Unfortunately by then the game was out of our reach and the final margin probably flattered our boys. This week’s match against Clayton now looms as a vital game in terms of keeping the win column ticking over
RESERVES – Sponsored by Remezzo’s Restaurant
The depth of the senior list is being sorely tested at present and in the two’s the absence of skipper Glenny Balmforth has been telling. Being undermanned in talent is one thing but it doesn’t stop the 18 on the field from cracking in. Those who could hold their heads up included Kam Watt, Ben Carracher, James Marasco, Jack Kreymborg and James Toranto
Under 19’s – Sponsored by the Bentleigh RSL
Belief and momentum are difficult commodities to harness in any team, at Under 19 level it’s an even bigger challenge. The boys did however managed to get it right with a terrific win against Cheltenham despite 6 of our prime movers missing. We were wonderfully led by Carl Herbstreit who amassed 42 possessions in an outstanding display of gut running dominance. Champion Data’s CEO Teddy Hopkins was excited with the 4 goals by lookalike Andrew Weiss and with plenty of good signs, notably the good form of Taylor Mancal attacking off half back, the stepping up of Numbers into the midfield and the improvement in big Kyle Simon and James Cameron down back we take a decent dose of confidence against Clayton this week.
Netballers V Dingley
Both Div 1 & 2 teams suffered losses against Dingley but both sit in 3rd position on their ladders and are well in contention at this stage of the season.
Social & Other News
As always thanks to all involved with the organisation and running of the Matty Rojahn Day in particular, Wayne & Robyn Manders, Pearo, Col Wright and his helpers????? Also thanks to Trish, Maggie and Michelle for their hard work in the canteen and for freshening up the presentation. Well done girls. In a St Pauls first, 16 year old Karl (3G) Abourisk saddled up in his first game for the Doggies under 19’s following in the footsteps of his Dad Phil and grandfather Mick who was the inaugural Captain/Coach of the Doggies.
