RESERVES
The Reserves travelled to Gembrook with Brendan Adams, Stephen Steiner, Michael Heyes, Jack Hill and Jack Goonan (in for his first game for Alexandra) replacing Luke Ware (seniors) and the injured Len Jenkins, Cory Jack, Luke Heard and Brendan Witnish The first quarter in the drizzly wet conditions was fairly even as each side tried to get on top with Alex holding a seven point lead at the first change. Alex had the better of the second quarter with three goals to nil to lead by 29 points at half- time. With Jock Blakeney active up forward Alex. virtually won the game in the third term, as they added five goals but also kept the home side scoreless. The last quarter was a battle of defences as conditions deteriorated with the Alex. defence led by Chase Pearce well on top. New player Brendon Adams fitted into the defence well and his run and carry gave the forwards many opportunities. Jack Goonan in his first game for the club showed his class in the midfield and should soon join his brother in the senior side. Daniel Roper is now an important contributor to the team and gives 100% each week. Conditions suited Stephen Steiner, Brent McDonald and Paul Wallis as they won many kicks at ground level whilst Tom Halligan and Travis Carter used their pace to advantage on the wide wings at Gembrook. Alex. 12.15.87 to G.C. 1.4.10.
SENIORS.
The Senior team made the longest trip of the season to Gembrook intent on getting their season back on track with a couple of changes from the side beaten at home last week. Coach Lee Rowe and Luke Ware came into the side to replace Jack Elkington (knee) and Stephen Steiner. Alexandra had not won at Gembrook since 1983 when coach Jeff Bates (8gls) and Peter Norris (7) led the Rebels to their one and only win at the venue. Alex. began to the southern end in wet, miserable conditions but got off to a flying start as they got the ball out of the centre quickly down to Brent Jane who kicked accurately. Play rebounded between the half back lines for some minutes before Lee Rowe’s long shot hit the post. Alex had further opportunities but only behinds resulted as the home side took advantage of some umpiring decisions to kick their first goal. Goals were hard to come by as Alex went to quarter time three points ahead. Gembrook Cockatoo took the lead with the first goal of the second quarter but Russell Comb playing well sent forward and Rowe marked well for Alex’s second goal. Play again was between the back-lines before the home side kicked another goal. Comb was again involved as he forwarded to Nathan Dundas whose long kick was right on target. Rain had now been replaced by fog as a pack mark in the goal-square to Gembrook Cockatoo gave them their fourth goal and a five point lead at the half-time break. The third quarter was tight but Alexandra were gradually getting on top although it did not show on the electronic score-board until Damien Toomey resting up forward goaled. Rowe using his experience was in the right place and goaled from in front of the pack to give his team the lead. Rain was again falling as Jane directed a” Daicos” like goal through to give Alex. an eleven point lead at the last change. Gembrook Cockatoo had a chance early in the last but missed and Alex. then took the ball the length of the ground but also were astray. Comb, strong at the contest roved well to kick Alex’s seventh goal. Alex were now on top as the rain had stopped and continually sent the ball forward where Jane finished of the good play from up field with the last three goals of the game to over-run Gembrook in the last quarter as they did in their last win at Gembrook. Alex. 10.10. to 4.10. Best: Sam Kidd led a solid defence that kept the home side goalless after half-time whilst. Damien Toomey continues to show why he is so highly rated by his peers with another fine game in conditions not really suiting. Russell Comb was very good in the midfield and sent Alex. forward on many occasions. Brent Jane (5goals) continues to give Alex a target up forward. Michael Miller’s long kicking of the wet ball cleared the defensive area often and Justin Murphy and Will Goonan reveled in the conditions. Alexandra next are at home to the unbeaten Seville who Alex have not beaten since our premiership year 2008 and will need to be at their top to arrest the twelve game (inc two finals) losing streak
