The Seniors had a much needed win against a dogged Old Melb side at a water logged junction oval. We really needed to win this game but so did Old Melb. The game started in steady rain. It was a torrid affair in the first quarter with both sides throwing everything at each other. The ground was quite good around the centre but was very wet around the wings and flanks. At Qtr time the score was a dour 2 points all.
The second quarter was much of the same except that we had the opportunity to score 2goals 3 whilst keeping Old Melb goalless. We were tackling hard and not giving our opposition any chances to break free. The ball seemed to spend a lot of time out of bounds because of slippery conditions, close tackling, wet weather play (knock ons, kicks off the ground, players sliding into the contest, ball squewing off the boot, quick kicks etc).
The third quarter saw Old Melb score 3 goals 6 behinds to our 1 goal 1 point. Old Melb had some big bodies and they threw everythig at us in this quarter. Our lead at 3/4 time was only 3 points but they had had more scoring shots.
So it was game on in the last quarter and although the rain had stopped it was still a slog. We managed to kick one goal 6 behinds but our defence held up and kept them to only 3 points. We ran out winners by 12 points after leading all day. We had no choice but to play wet weather football and our much better defensive skills and higher tackle count all over the groudn kept Old Melb to 3 goalless quarters. Fitness would have played a part as well.

The U19s won on the last kick of the day against a top side - De La Salle by the narrowist of margins. We started well and were ahead at qtr time. The ground was slippery but had drained well although the centre was muddy.
The second qtr saw a defensive struggle and both teams managed only one goal. After the break De La came out with renewed enthusiasm and kicked 3 goals 4 behinds to our 1 goal 1. So at the orange break De La were ahead by 7 points.
The final quarter and we needed to kick a winning score. The game was ours to win but were we fit enough? Well we showed what a fighting spirit we have and we kicked 3 goals 3 and kept them to 2 goals 1 - enough to sneak home by one point.
Goal Kickers: W. Meehan 3, M. McIntyre 2, T. Beard 2, C. Bott , C. Watson
