CONGUPNA FOOTBALL AND NETBALL CLUB ROUND 4 3 May 2014
Seniors
I told you last week that I hated felines. I now suspect that you do too!
The coaching staff approached last week’s game as being a ‘huge opportunity’ for The Road. The pre-match address was thorough, but simple. There was an element of excitement around playing against another ‘top team’. Our intensity was fantastic right from the get-go. Particularly impressive was the ferocity of our forward tackling. Our defensive pressure was excellent and caused a significant turnover which resulted in our first goal. Our turnovers again proved costly providing two of Finley’s first quarter goals. Qtr time scores 1.2 to 4.0. The message at the first break was to continue with our intensity and our creativity and things would happen. And they did! Our midfielders were running hard and creating many opportunities. The goals began to flow with Adrian Hickey #45 posting his maiden, followed by majors to Moo, Jack Ellis and JC (Jessie). Half time scores 5.4 to 5.5.
The main break saw a minor restructure to the forward-line with Moo to play deep. This paid immediate dividends for us as he had two goals in the first two minutes! Jack Ellis had been building momentum during the first half and really stamped his presence on the game during the third, being involved in both of Moo’s goals and kicking one himself. Dion slotted one from the Member’s at 45 (almost becoming a weekly occurrence) to keep us in touch. Three quarter time scores 9.4 to 9.7. The final quarter was a ‘battle of the backlines’, with neither team willing to give any ground. Congo, the Harrys, Bowlsie, Shanno and Hicksie were outstanding. Regan Sheehan continually belied his age and stature with aggressive attack on the ball and the ball carrier. A succession of accurate passes saw DC break the deadlock and the Roaders hit the lead (for the first time) by four points late in the quarter. A forward thrust by the Cats in the dying minutes saw them regain the lead and hold on. Final scores 10.7 to 10.9.
Catch you next week …. (I hate blues ……. what is a blue anyway?). ROADKILL
Reserves
It was a physical contest in the reserves with the discipline from both clubs being pushed. We got off to a promising start and kicked out to an early lead but to Finley’s credit they fought back in the third quarter and the scores were closer than we would have liked. To our boys credit we steadied in the final quarter by improving our disposal and controlling possession to run away with a 5 goal win. Awards : Club Mug – Joel Costa, Kilpatrick Plumbing – Johno O’ Donoghue, GV Hotel – Paul Simpson, Charcoal Chicken – Ayden Graham and Kialla Pizza – Tim Zak

Congupna rolled up on Saturday looking forward to taking on Finley in a game that they knew would be tough and highly skilled. Congupna welcomed back a couple of players and started well leading by 3 goals at quarter time. After a tough second quarter the game was all tied up at half time. Both teams started well in the third quarter playing fast free flowing football. Congupna held a slight 1 goal lead at 3 quarter time. The last quarter continued on in the same vain with both sides moving the ball well. In the end Congupna ran out winners by 2 goals in what was a terrific game of football to watch. Better players were Trent Greening (5 goals), Joel Brett, Pud Martin, Matt Tietz, Matt Collins and Kobe Currie
Under 14
Last week our 4ths Young Guns took on a very well drilled outfit in Finley. Our lads started slowly again and the Cats capitalised. By quarter time Finley were 5 goals up, by 9 at half time and game over …or so everyone thought. Progressively we got better as the game unfolded, with our endeavour and effort in the last quarter second to none. There was more talk, going in harder for the ball, we manned up and our tackle rate, smothers, shepherds and tap –ons tripled in that quarter. If we could bottle that tenacity and play every quarter like that we would be champions.
Our single goal came through the agency of ‘Lucky’ Luke Bartels who also took home the Trellys award. Fyfey returned to form and won the Sportsfirst award, with Jordie Gee ‘Whiz’ (like salt, in everything) the Congupna Shop Voucher. A beanie went to Broph for his skilful efforts, a hat to Josh Dillion who was fierce across half-back, a meal voucher to Paddy Jaco for his hungry family for his tackling hard and getting in first to get the ball.
A Grade - Congupna were eager to follow last week’s strong performance with another against Finley. However, it was Finley who made the stronger start, converting Congupna’s mistakes into a 15-10 lead at ¼ time. Some changes lead to a stronger performance in the second ¼, which was much more defensive than the 1st ¼ and Finley sneaked 1 extra goal than Congupna in the ¼ to be ahead 25 19 at ½ time. A poor 3rd ¼ from Congupna, coupled with a strong performance from Finley extended the lead to 41-24 at ¾ time. Congupna had its strongest performance in the last ¼ but still was beaten by a strong Finley 16-18 to produce a final score of 40-59. Best on was Tegan Fairley followed by Nicci Jeffery.
B Grade - What an exciting match to watch. Both teams played beautiful netball and moved the ball well all over the court. Defensive work by both teams was fantastic as well as the goaling efforts. Finley had a great 2nd quarter to take the lead. Our girls played an awesome 3rd quarter to be right back in the game. The last quarter was level, goal for goal, until Finley used a couple of our mistimed passes to draw away. Fantastic effort by our fill-ins - Hannah Dainton (C) and Hannah O'Meara (17s) who slotted in beautifully. Awards - Hannah O'Meara (GV) and Olivia Baxter
C grade - continued their stellar start to the season with another impressive performance. With accurate goaling and some extremely tight defence they went into the first break 15 -4. The momentum continued for the remainder of the game, finishing off with another great win. Final scores 54 - 26. Awards: GV Hotel Rach (DingDong) Bell. Nando's Wendy (The Old Girl) Sidebottom. Four from four, great start girls!
C Res - We got off to a bad start with Jaz rolling her within the first few minutes, but we continued to work hard and were only 5 down at the 1 st break, we stayed with them right thu and it was only in the last quarter that they really kicked away , we did well they were a very experienced team.
We moved the ball well thru the midcourt with liana playing her best game yet, our defence in Mon and Loz was great as usual, we also had gabby come in from 17's and was a great option , our goalers again were strong with Illara shooting some outstanding goals , well done girls keep fighting hard . Awards GV Liana & Nandos Larz
17 & Under - Well done on a strong win , we came out strong and got away to a great start, but as the game went on so did Finley's defensive pressure, and we responded well. Aimee and Hanna combined well Sophie was very strong thru the mid court, and our defence was so strong I can see huge improvements from week to week from all the team , keep working hard ! Thanks to Ella Sidebottom for helping out on the bench. Awards, Nandos Aimee, Video Ezy Sophine and $10 award Taylah
15 & Under - The team recorded a win over Finley with some very strong defensive play and accurate work in attack in the 3rd quarter to make a break away from Finley. Up until half time there was very little in the game. Defenders worked well, especially Reagan who read the play well and rebounded strongly. The team moved the ball down the court with greater precision as the game progressed and finished off with some excellent goaling. Awards - Reagan Martin (Nandos), Hannah Kulari (Video Ezy)
