A couple of hard games saw the Over 45s defeat the Gold Coast for the first time and the Over 65s go down to a very slick Burleigh outfit.
This week sees Saturday footy back at Morningside as we play cross town rivals Wilston Grange. The 35s are on first for a change at 2.00pm with the 45s on at 4.00. Bring the family for a great arvo of footy.
Here once again is the Supers game report: (one day I hope one of the Over 45s learns how to write!!!)
The supers 3rd game of the season saw us face yet another very hot day (and we all thought footy was a winter sport!!), going up against what turned out to be a pretty well drilled outfit from Burleigh. Down on numbers again due to the long weekend, thanks go to the masters (Cookie, Humey and co) who backed up to at least give us someone on the bench, as well as Chippa who whilst injured and had come down to provide some moral support, found himself pulling on a jersey.
We got off to a flying start with Big Dunc getting the first hit out to Nugget who ran though the centre and hit Patty on a strong lead. Paddy duly slotted the kick from a slight angle and those of us in the backline thought how good is this! Unfortunately this was our only goal for the quarter and Burleigh proceeded to put on 8 majors for the quarter in a pretty dominant display. Our backline led superbly by Hatchie (who after missing an easy shot in front of goal in the last game was 'promoted' into a new role at fullback) and ably assisted by Riki and Craig, worked extremely hard to repel the Burleigh forward thrusts but at quarter time we found ourselves down by 44 pts - scores were M'Side 1 - 2 - 8 to Burleigh 8 - 4 - 52.
Nuggets instructions at quarter time were clear - "pick up the ball" and "look for a target" - pretty simple stuff really, but nonetheless it was what we had to do.The second quarter was a much closer affair, with the half back line of Coombsy, Barney and Mic working well together, and Damo and Gadso dropping back to help out where they could. We seemed also to slow down the game and started to find our targets and as a result were able to hold Burleigh to 3 goals whilst Paddy was able to add 2 more for us. At the long break we were still down by 48 pts with the scores M'Side 3 - 5 - 23 to Burleigh 11 - 5 - 71, but we were on the right track.
The third quarter was also tight, and our boys continued to work hard at the contests with Carbs, Nugget and Shane (playing a great first game for us) working overtime through the middle. Langers also started to get a bit of the ball and despite getting completely cleaned up in an early nomination for tackle of the season or century he got up and went again - keep it up Langers! In his own words.... "Welcome to Aussie Rules". Dicko, Patty, Deano (who thought he was Gary Ablett by taking a bounce in heavy traffic) and the injured Chippa kept working hard presenting as targets up forward but we found it hard to convert our opportunities on the scoreboard. The backline kept applying the spoiling pressure and as a result Burleigh missed quite a few opportunities and we went to the break after another hard fought close quarter still down, but not disgraced. Scores - M'Side 3 - 7 - 25 to Burleigh 12 - 12 - 84
The heat of the day and our lack of bench strength told in the last quarter, and we basically just ran out of legs. Whilst Hatchie and the backline kept working hard, Burleigh's run out of the middle and their ability to hit their leading forwards was just too good and they piled on 7 goals for the quarter compared to our 1 goal. Gadso also gets a nomination for the worst kick of the year award for his 2 metre effort nearly hitting an unsuspecting Hatchie in the head - the less said on that the better, but also Nugget for trying a drop kick for goal that barely got off the ground, much to the disgust of Paddy who was running into a goal but decided to look after the coach. Final scores being M'Side 4 - 9 - 33 to Burleigh 19 - 15 – 129
So boys, it was a loss and yes it was a big one. But we came up against a very good team on the day so take heart that we are in patches showing what we are capable of if we do the simple things like picking up the ball and looking for a target. Take it easy this week boys, and get yourselves ready to back up in 6 days against Grange. We play the main game this round so we need to show the Masters what we are capable of.
Thanks to Boehmey, MT and Larry from the Masters for helping with the bench and water and also to Gadso's kids who ran water for both the Masters and Supers games. Many thanks also to Craig and Firmsey (fast becoming our semi-professional chef) for running the BBQ and Riki for cleaning up the change rooms after the game.
Goals: Paddy 4
Best: Hatch, Coombsy, Carbs, Paddy, Shane, Craig, Riki.
