Port too good for Tigers By Domenic Favata
The Werribee Tigers have suffered their second defeat of the year going down to Port Melbourne by 13 points at North Port Oval.
Senior Coach John Lamomt said after the game “I was pleased with the first quarter. Port came out really hard and we absorbed that pressure. We were really disappointed with the second quarter as a coaching group. We just lost our initiative and couldn't apply good enough pressure. We tried to change a few things up, but lost composure with our ball use and gave away goals and denied ourselves goals during that period.”
From the second quarter onwards, the Tigers were just unable to close the margin, with Port answering every Werribee challenge, frustrating players, coaches and supporters alike.
Daw’s fifth goal got the Tigers within 11 points midway through the last quarter, but it was the story of the day, the Borough fended off the challenge with two goals in quick succession, including a monster mark and goal from Anthony Bonaddio.
“In that second half we just didn’t get any momentum, didn’t get our tails up and didn’t get that enthusiasm that comes from repeat goals,” Lamont said.
Highlights for the coach were Daw, who was “pretty consistent” with five majors, while Jye Bolton and Jarred Moore (28 disposals) were prolific in the midfield, with Bolton in particular doing a fine tagging job on Borough ball magnet Shane Valenti in the second half.
Another highlight was the first game of Meyrick Buchanan in the seniors, brother of former Swan and Lion Amon Buchanan, who acquitted himself well on the big stage.
“He has been out of the game and this was his first real pre-season. He was lively and looked dangerous at times. He will be better off for the experience,” Lamont said.
The Tigers next tackle the Northern Blues under lights at Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday the 26th of April.

In the Development clash, Port Melbourne were too good for Werribee and ran away 41 point winners thanks to a dominant last quarter.
The home side led for the majority of the game, with Werribee only momentarily hitting the front midway through the third quarter thanks to Matt Boag, who had a solid game up forward with three clinical goals.
The Tigers kept within touching distance throughout the match, but a late flurry of Borough goals was enough for Port Melbourne to fend off a gallant effort.
The loss means Werribee is still winless from two games this season, but signs are promising if they put together a consistent performance across all quarters.
