Goals: Bzenic 2, Evans 2, Cleary 2, Van Der Byl, Anderson
Jacob Gleeson’s 20 disposals and 2 goals and Jesse Tardio 31 touches led the Northern Blues to a comfortable 67-point victory against the Lions on Good Friday.
The Lions were unable to control the contested ball and were dominated in the clearances and struggled to find space all game.
Jesse Boyd, Jai Robinson and Fabian Brancatisano all had solid games for the Burgers who started the quarters well, but inconsistency caused them to make costly turnovers.
Jake Anderson got the Lions out of the blocks with the first of the game, a habit both senior and development sides have made so far this season. Stephen Murray was quick to respond for the Blues who dominated possession but were unable to convert their chances into goals.
Chances became hard to come by in the quarter for Coburg as they struggled to cope with the wet ball in the rain. They would trail the Blues by 11 at the first change.
The Burgers started the second quarter with a goal out of mid-air to Charlie Van Der Byl. It would be the only goal they would kick of the term as Northern’s midfielders led by Jesse Tardio controlled proceedings.
Northern’s intensity forced the game upon the young Lions and they were unable to cope giving away the ball 29 times in the first half.
The second half began with a long goal from Ruairi Cleary in his return to Coburg football after a five-goal haul last week playing for West Coburg.
Minutes later Danko Bzenic kicked the first of two second half goals to provide the Lions with some life, but they were overran with tired legs and tired minds as Northern kicked away with goals from Stephen Murray, Kyle Emley and Myles Dorman to name a few.
Late goals from Morgan Evans and Ruairi Cleary were mere consolations for the Burgers as they fell to the Blues by 67 points.
Development coach Paul Carbis said after the game that the side showed better effort this week.
“Just the simple basic things we need to work on. We make mistakes and it costs us dearly. We just need to keep defending to keep improving” Carbis said.
The Development side will need to be competing at a higher level when it takes on Box Hill next Saturday at 11:00AM
