Seniors
The match last Saturday on the big Epping ground was a good hit out despite another loss as the team showed it can play at the standard required. The Hills were ferocious with tackles and deliberate with ball movement but after quarter time were repelled by the Blues backline too many times with their run taking the ball forward. Newcomer Reid Staples showing his value as well as fellow new recruits Travis Miller and younggun Tom Blake with some exciting high marking. Jeremy Gercovich was terrific down back, Tyler Scarce continued to work hard through the middle and chipped in with 3 goals and Brendan O’Connor took plenty of marks across half forward. Congratulations also to Jonty Rushton after being promoted from the under 19’s for his first senior game.
Reserves
A much better run by The Hills last Saturday as many of the new players found their feet. A strong physical presence right from the first bounce gave the Hills the edge but unfortunately the boys couldn’t keep up with the Epping side in the second half as lack of fitness took a toll. Luke Morse in the back pocket was the best player for the Hills and is showing plenty after working hard in pre-season in his return to football after a few years off. New recruits Glen Barnes, James Flack, Nathan Hansen and Shane McLagan all performed well whilst Brad Sansom was also solid down back. Special mention to Andy Garcia for his ruckwork. He has just taken up the game after coming here from the USA and didn’t know what Aussie Rules was only a couple of months ago - impressive. Now for a great opportunity today against local rivals Saturday week with a few more handy players back into the side.
Under 19s
A much tougher contest for the Redbacks last Saturday against a talented Epping side and ultimately a big loss but still plenty to like. The Redbacks kept pace with the much bigger and stronger Epping team until quarter time but Epping outclassed our boys and gained a 50 point lead at half time. The 3rd quarter was better but Epping were still much faster. The Hill learnt a lot and will be better for the experience but need to continue to work on fitness. Great performance up forward by Josh Hodges while Mark Kurungaiyi was showing off his skills through the middle and Scott Thompson was relentless in defence. The team has to regroup ready for the big clash against Hurstbridge Saturday week.
