The Northern Blues Amateurs began season 2014 in emphatic fashion on Saturday, defeating the Albert Park Falcons by 91 points at Sportscover Arena.
The win marks the newly promoted Blues first game in division 3 after being promoted as the division 4 premiers last year.
James King was the standout in the first round contest kicking eight goals, three coming in a fast flowing opening term.
Despite the substantial margin, the Blues didn’t have it all their own way in the clash, having to fend off a physical Falcons in the first half.
However, the Blues utilised their fitness on the spacious ground in the second half to kick goals at will and blow the game wide open.
Newly appointed leader Matt Holmes was fantastic in giving direction to his younger teammates, complimented by silky work from younger brother Lachlan in the midfield.
Speaking with Northern Blues Amateurs media post game, premiership player Brady Parke was ecstatic with the team’s performance but empasised that it was just one game in a long season.
“It’s always great to start the season off with a win like that,” Parke said.
“We knew if we kept focusing on the process, we would start to apply pressure on the scoreboard, and we did.”
“We need to regroup quickly now, we have a huge game coming up this week.”
The Northern Blues Amateurs face Eley Park Sharks in the grand final rematch at Ruthven Reserve, 2:00 this Saturday.
The premiership flag will be unfurled prior to the match to commemorate the club’s first home game of 2014.
The club will celebrate its Season Launch at the Royal Derby after the game on Saturday night. Supporters, families and friends are all welcomed to attend.
