Over the weekend South Toowoomba AFC christened their new home ground with two massive days of football at Heritage Oval against Coolaroo, which saw all grades in action for this first time in 2014. The milestone occasion was a successful one for the club with great spectator numbers across the two days as well as 5 out of 6 possible victories for the Red and Black.
The Round 2 fixture with Coolaroo was kicked off with a blockbuster Friday night game with the Division one clash providing a gripping game of football for the large Heritage Oval crowd. The Bombers started very strongly and put on a classy display of football for three quarters going into the final term up by 4 goals.
Unfortunately the Roos came out of the blocks faster than the Bombers and kicked the first four goals of the final term which would see the game go down to the wire. In a very physical game of football the Bombers unfortunately fell an agonising 1 point short of Coolaroo, however took a lot of positives out of the game and was it encouraging to see the new faces in the team having great games.
Saturday saw the rest of the club take on the Roos with a full day of footy action.
The Bombers Women's team were back to their best as they took on the new kids on the block in a twilight game which saw them run out a huge victors over the Roo girls. The game was a physical and entertaining encounter which saw the 2013 Womens Premiership side flex their muscles and show the competition that they will be real contenders again in 2014.
The Division 2 mens side kicked off their season in the new format, which saw a side full of young and new faces gelling together to allow the Bombers put on a strong display in their first run. In a game that was close for the majority of the afternoon, the young Bombers stood up and used their skill and pace to help close out the game out which saw them run out 21 point victors over Coolaroo. It highlighted the depth and talent that the Bombers squad has coming through the ranks and shows positive signs looking forward in 2014.
The Junior Bombers also had a successful day running out victors in all competitive age groups.
The Under 16s had a hard running game of football which saw the young side defeat the 2013 premiers by just 10 points. Accurate goal kicking helped the side to a 9.6.60 to 6.14.50 victory.
The Under 14s were thin on numbers but full of spirit as they put on a gutsy effort in their 26 point victory over the Roos. With some new faces in the side, the boys and girls clicked together and played extremely well for their win.
The Michael Barr Cup was up for grabs in the Under 12 age group, and the Bombers kicked off the day with a strong 67 point victory taking back the Cup.
As usual the 8s and 10s had a load of fun, with plenty of numbers and smiles showing great signs for the future of Aussie Rules in the region.
Thanks to everyone who came and supported, helped out and played over the weekend.
