The Northern Blues Amateurs are ready to tackle 2014 head on after working closely with former Essendon and military trainer Fred Lehmann this pre-season.
With the impending move up to VAFA’s division three against bigger bodies and tougher opponents, Lehmann has taken an active role in readying the Blues for the upcoming year.
Sarcastically labeling the pre-season ‘Fun with Fred’, Lehmann said playing group has tackled every challenge he has thrown at them with a high level of enthusiasm and determination.
Lehmann even took the group to Churchill National Park on Saturday the 22nd of March, where over 40 players impressed him by completing a series of mental and physical challenges.
“I have been impressed by all the players,” said Lehmann.
“Even on the 12 km run through the bush and scrub there were smiles and encouragement.”
While the challenges laid out were designed to be physically demanding, they also incorporated trust, communication and co-operation skills pivotal to developing a team environment.
“Our pre season has had quite an emphasis on strength and conditioning and in particular mental toughening,” Lehmann said.
“That said the bar will continue to rise and new standards of intensity and effort will be required.”
