Greta this week has confirmed ex AFL premiership player and All Australian Campbell Brown will be playing a one off game for the Blues on Sunday 6th April against rivals King Valley at the WJ Findlay Oval.
Campbell Brown who has played 205 AFL games including 159 for Hawthorne before departing the Hawks and Joining the Gold Coast Suns in 2011 to play 46 games before his career was cut short last December after being sacked by the Gold Coast Suns for an incident where then team mate Steven May ended up with a Broken Jaw after a fight in Los Angeles after a pre season camp in Arizona.
Greta Football & Netball Club have been working on plans to secure an ex AFL player to the Club for a number of years to raise the profile of the Greta Football & Netball Club along with the Ovens & King Football & Netball league.
Vice President Dan McCarthy said “It has been a long time in the making as we were looking at a number of dates that could be suitable as well as trying to secure the availability of a high profile player but it has now all come together thanks to the great support of the entire King Valley team in allowing us to play them as a blockbuster round 2 game at WJ Findlay Oval.
It will be great to be playing King Valley as the Clubs have always had a tight contest over the years in football and netball and we expect a great game this year with not only the football but also the Netball with both clubs landing some off season recruits.”
Co-President Jarrod Franklin said “It is very exciting to be a part of a game like this, all of the players and people around the Club are thrilled of what we have been able to pull off and the support from our sponsors is sensational with Wangaratta Turf Club, Easybet, Canny’s Wangaratta, Dan McCarthy Electrical, Naish Security Shredding, Steve & Linda’s IGA, Muntz St Butchery, Landmark Harcourts, Sportsman’s Warehouse and Carlton United Breweries jumping on board to make the game possible and all of those sponsors were excited to be a part of something so big for Greta.
The Club will also be holding a sportsman’s night after the game at the Oaks Function Centre at the Racecourse where not only Campbell Brown will be a guest speaker, his father Mal Brown will also be making the trip to Wangaratta to watch his son and be a part of the evening which is expected to give plenty of insight behind the scenes of not only how Campbell ended up at Hawthorn and Gold Coast Suns, but will also talk about footy trips, stories about other AFL players including his ex team mate Gary Ablett and the funnier things that have happened throughout his career that the public don’t know about.”
Campbell Brown said “I’m looking forward and heading up to Wangaratta to be able to play for Greta, It is a big thing for country football when any ex AFL Player gets out and gives something back to the grass roots football and I will be looking forward to getting back playing after leaving the Suns. Greta has been great to deal with which is one of the reasons I am so excited to be playing a game for them, they have been professional about it from the start and just this week we were able to catch up and have a few beers and get to know each other and sign the paperwork.
It is definitely what I had been planning on as I would have been lining up for the Gold Coast, but after the pre season I have kept up my fitness with having a run with the Scotch College under 18’s team assisting them as well as plenty of swimming as I get ready to Swim the English Chanel next year.
Getting a game of football into me isn’t easy as I have just taken up a role with Triple M radio for Saturday mornings show and part of the commentary team for Saturday night Football with these opportunities only being finalised over the past month. I love my horse racing so it will be great to check out the facilities at the Wangaratta Turf Club whilst having a great night at the sportsman’s night with my wife Jess and Mum & Dad coming along to the game as well as the night.”
Greta Coach Brent Nichols said “It will be great to have the opportunity of having Campbell in our team, the players are really excited and we are shore he will be able to give us some great insight and assist in a few of the younger players game.”
Bookings over the phone for the Sportsman’s night are also available by contacting the Wangaratta Turf Club on (03) 57 22 1242.
