After an incredibly tough preseason, the Killarney Vale senior squad headed to Macquare University to take on a strong university outfit in the annual trial. It was pleasing to see so many players make the trip down to Sydney. The day consisted of 6 periods where both sides could gradually introduce players so that the last three periods featured the players who will compete for selection in both Premier League and First Division in round one.
Coach John Pidgeon had the luxury of analysing the performances of the entire squad. The selection committee will have their hands full as there are 35 genuine chances for selection for the Premier League side in Round 1. John also selected 4 players from the club's Under 17's. Captain Bailey West, ex Sydney Swans Academy player, Will Cross Hicks, Jayden Banfield and Campbell Wilson were really impressive and the future looks bright as these players will move into the senior club in 2015.
Max Mumford, Michael Besley, and Brendan Lewis stood out in the early stages. The grandstand shook when enforcer Jordan Evans made a bone jarring tackle which knocked the University player into next week. There was some real passion and examples of tough contested football during the day and emotions spilled over as players were keen to impress. However, when returning superstars, Rick White and Bryce Singleton were introduced by John, the game went to another level. Their ability to win the contested ball, their decision making and execution will make such a difference to the bombers in 2014. The exciting news is that the First Division side looks like it will be really competitive in 2014.
The bombers now head back to the training track where the entire squad will be focussed on proving to the coach that they should be in the Premier League side for round 1.
Through the last 3 periods, the scores were:
KV - 1.1, 4.3, 2.1 - 7.5.47
MU - 0.1, 2.0, 3.2 - 5.3.33
Goals:
D. Lloyd 3
N. Wenger 1
D. Amidy 1
H. Wells 1
M. Besley 1
