Daniel Venditti led his side to a six-goal win over Team Carnell in Coburg’s intra-club practice match last Friday at Highgate Recreation Reserve.
Team Venditti jumped out to a 21 point lead at half-time, before Team Carnell came back strong to only trail by 4 points at the final change, before the captain added two final quarter goals to lead his side to victory.
It was a cloudy Friday afternoon in Craigieburn and the Lions’ players were ready for a friendly encounter to show their coaches what they’re capable of for Season 2014.
Jai Robinson kicked the opener for Team Venditti. Daniel Younan, Tyssen Morrow and Riley Hogan added a goal each to give Team Venditti a 15-point lead at quarter time.
The second quarter was much more even with Team Carnell gaining a lot more of the ball. Despite goals from Zak Saad, Ruairi Cleary and Ben Sortino, Team Carnell was unable to shut down Team Venditti’s work at the stoppages.
Michael Hartley put in a fantastic performance at centre-half back for Team Carnell, whilst Omar Abdallah was critical in gaining the ball out of the middle for Team Venditti.
Team Carnell responded well for the second half. They were led by new mid-sized forward Matthew Clark who booted three third quarter goals to bring his teammates within 4 points of the opposition at three quarter time.
But the comeback wasn’t to be as team captain Daniel Venditti led by example in the final term. He broke the game open with two goals in as many minutes, whilst Adrian Fancellu and Liam Brandt also found their names on the scoresheet as they held Team Carnell to a solitary behind to eventually win by 36 points.
