CDHBU Power warmed up for their 2014 Hume League season with a hard fought 22 point win over Ovens and King powerhouse, Moyhu, in their first practice game at John Foord Oval on Friday night.
Played in front of a big crowd on an immaculately presented John Foord Oval the Power made the most of the breeze in the first quarter by booting 4 goals. Big forward Luke Cowan was on the board early as was stalwart Doug Lavis. When the ball did venture forward for Moyhu, they were thwarted by Sam and Tyson Burdon and Tim Cooper. Arron Ray was prominent on the wing as was Tom Maloney on the opposite side of the ground. The Power took in a 24 point lead at half time.
The second quarter was almost the opposite of the first with Moyhu making the most of the breeze with quick, long ball movement into their forward line. New recruit, Richard Findlay, found the scoreboard for Moyhu with some telling marks and goals. However, the Power managed to do what Moyhu failed to achieve in the first quarter and that was kick goals against the breeze. Alex Wallis, playing his first game in ten months, was taking some big contested marks, whilst Ben Wilson and Maddern Lohse toiled hard. Despite Moyhu kicking five second quarter goals the Power took a 4 point lead into half time.
The third quarter also seen Moyhu fail to kick a goal against the breeze as the Power added 4. Joel Rippingale was beginning to work into the game and Jeremy Stevenson took control in the mid field. Nathan Rhodes was utilsing his pace in finding plenty of room and penetrating the forward line with long, accurate kicks. This allowed Corey Hickford to get on the board with a goal as did young gun Jordan Lavis.
Moyhu managed to kick three goals in the last quarter but, as proved the difference between the two teams, the Power managed to kick goals against the breeze. Corey Hickford added another goal to his name as the Power rounded off the game with a 22 point victory against what must be said a Moyhu team without several of its stars. Having said that, the Power can look forward to the return of Josh Lewis, Andrew Ollington, Matt Ross and Shay Rhodes.
Final Scores: CDHBU 11-11-77 dft Moyhu 8-7-55
Goals: Doug Lavis, Corey Hickford; 2, Luke Cowan, Nathan Rhodes, Jeremy Stevenson, Tyson Burdon, Jordan Lavis, Corey Smith, Arron Ray; 1.
Best: Jeremy Stevenson, Nathan Rhodes, Sam Burdon, Tyson Burdon, Madden Lohse, Ben Wilson, Tom Maloney.
The Power Thirds travelled to Chiltern where they came up against a much bigger opponent. Andrew Phibbs and Kane Mills, despite being bottom age thirds players, showed the way by continuously putting their heads over the ball. Hayden Brockley was a tower of strength and won his position in the ruck whilst Steve Cordwell popped and kicked half of the Power’s goals. Cameron Dutton, although still eligible for under 14’s, also tried his heart out. However despite their efforts, it was not enough to prevent a 23 point loss. Despite the loss Coach Michael Kreun has seen plenty to make him excited about the prospects of the Power thirds for season 2014.
The practice games continue this Friday night with the fourths, thirds and seniors coming up against Rutherglen. The action begins at 5 pm once again down at John Foord Oval. Refreshments and a BBQ are available.
The Power would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who turned out last Friday to both witness the game and to help out. Also many thanks to Moyhu for playing the game in great spirit, we wish you all the best for season 2014. Let’s all get down to John Foord again this Friday.
