Dear Murrumbeena Auskick Families,
The South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) has just advised clubs that they have introduced a new Under 8 competition for Season 2014.
Children eligible for Under 8s footy are those born in 2006 - i.e., have already turned 7 before 1/1/14 . Those who will turn 8 before 1/1/14 will play U9s.
Where possible in the past, Murrumbeena JFC has generally placed our youngest players in the same team and they have played 2 years in U9s.
In the first instance, Murrumbeena JFC would like know if there is enough interest among parents for this new Under 8s competition. We are especially interested to hear from parents who would not have initially registered their child for Under 9s in Season 2014 but would now consider this new competition. Also, any parents who would like their child to play in Under 8s in 2014 rather than starting straight off in Under 9s.
The information from the SMJFL is as follows:
The SMJFL believes that the introduction of an Under 8 competition will assist both clubs and the SMJFL with the management of U9 players & teams. The following points have been taken into consideration:
·The intent of the new age group is to provide a more even competition for those U8s who would previously have toplay U9s
·Of the 1927 players playing in U9s in 2013, 807 (42%) would have been eligible for U8s
·U8 players can now play in their own age group, as opposed to potentially playing against players up to 23 months older than them
·There were a total of 79 Under 9 teams in 2013, by splitting the age groups, this enables SMJFL to have a better ability to grade the teams
·Ground sizes, teams numbers, rules etc. will be the same as per U9as not to create another set of rules to learn
·Under 8’s will finish their season with a Lightning Carnival, that will be held on the same weekend as the Under 9 Lightning Carnival
Please note that Clubs may still choose to only field Under 9s if they don’t have the numbers and/or for any other reason(s).
MJFC is excited by the possibility of fielding an Under 8s team in 2014 and would love to know if there is enough interest amongst our potential new players.
You can let us know your preference in the following ways:
