Life member and team of decade player Anthony Lowes, who for years dominated the wings of Gore Hill during the 2000's running opposition players ragged, on the weekend competed in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.
Like many of his former premiership teammates, once they retired they were very quickly drawn into the competitive challenge of completing the ironman event, consisting of 3.8km swim, 180km bike leg and the 42.2km run to the finish.
To no suprise of his former teammates, he smashed the Hawaiin event, finishing in a time of 9 hours 36 minutes, to finish 317 overall in the worlds toughest event.
Lowesy completed the swim in an hour, the bike leg in just over 5 hours, and smashed the marathon on the way home in 3 hours 17 minutes. Unbelievable effot, in one of the harshest environments.
During his playing days, Lowesy use to be laps in front of his teammates during time trials.
Even qualifying for the Hawaiin event is a massive challenge, as it is the best of the best that get to compete in the event. A top 3 finish in his age group at the Australian Championship event at Port Macquarie Ironman would have done the job, but unfortunately he was one place off making it in his first attempt at the ironman distance. So Lowesy had to head off to the New Zealand Ironman, where he got the podium result he needed to qualify with a third spot in his age group and 12th overall in the event.
Lowesy now joins former teammate Paul 'Chooka' Fowler as the second former player from their era to complete the Hawaii Ironman.
