After taking out the 2013 Division 3 Premiership the Coomera AFC is again on the move taking up a position in the recently restructured QFA Southern Conference (Queensland Football Association). The new competition will see the Magpies face off against Alexandra Hills, Burleigh, Coolangatta, Coorparoo, Kenmore, Robina, Springwood, Wynnum, Yeronga.
The stronger competition presents a daunting task but senior coach Stuart Vimpany says “This is exactly what the club had planned to happen before I signed on in 2013, this appointment gives us the opportunity to continue to grow this great club and I couldn’t be more excited about it. We have already had plenty of interest from players wanting to join us in 2014 and I know the boys we have are more then up to the challenge.”
The club announced during the week that they would be introducing a development team into the QAFA (B Grade) competition which was formally known as Division 4. This will give more opportunity to players within the area who are looking to either develop their skills or play a more social brand of football a chance to do so. The QAFA has in the past been played on a Friday night or Sunday but the club has also floated the idea of playing before the reserves or after the seniors under lights on Saturdays.
The 18’s look to be making their return after 2 seasons without representation in this age group. Club president Garry Smith stated that “A coach is yet to be announced but we are doing everything in the clubs power to attract the best possible candidates. 18’s is something we are passionate about doing right. We have a great bunch of young blokes coming through from our junior club and it’s so important that we create an environment that they want to remain a part of for many years to come. We blooded 11 kids into Senior footy in 2013 and we hope to continue to give them a taste at a higher level.”
Following the lead of the Junior club for the first time the Coomera AFC may field the “Maggettes” with a number of female footballers expressing interest in representing Coomera in the Under 18’s girls league. Damien Hofert, Junior Coaches Co-ordinator and Senior Vice President said “This is something we’d love to do, if the need is there to provide a team then we’ll work to make that happen. The girls who played with the Under 15’s this year represented the club fantastically. If they want to step up into senior levels we’d love to have them!”
