The final day of football in Sydney for 2013 kicked off with the Under 18 Goannas taking on Manly. The Goannas were keen to turn the tables on the Wolves after their semi final loss, and were feeling confident after a good week of preparation.
When the match got underway, it was the Wolves who got off to a flyer, catching the Goannas on the back foot and dominating the first quarter to establish a strong lead early. To their credit, the boys regrouped and lifted in the second quarter, making the match a much tighter affair and matching the Wolves.
At half time there was hope that if the boys could lift again they could make inroads into the lead and give themselves an outside chance. It was not to be however, as the Wolves came out and dominated the second half of the game despite the best efforts of the Goannas and in the end came away with a convincing win.
Arin Rickett finished his season off as he had done all year with a fantastic effort, with Jaryd Mayne and Harry Keenan both trying hard on the wings. Connor Dewar, Jack Strauhan, and Jake Havey also tried valiantly. D
espite not getting the result they wanted on the day, the season has been a great success for the team. Tony Cocks and Peter ‘Hair Bear’ Rickett have done an outstanding job with the team, and the club would like to thank them for their effort and think that 2014 could well be the year they go one better.
With the 2013 season now drawn to a close, the Goannas would like to extend thanks to all the sponsors and all of the other supporters who have contributed to the club’s success. This season was the most successful season on the field for the Goannas, and things are only going to get better in 2014, with the club confident that premiership success is just around the corner. We hope we see you all back at Gipps Road Oval for 2014!
