What looked like a massive mountain to climb 12 months ago has been conquered in grand style with the Jeremy Freeman inspired Under 19 team taking out the Section 3 Premiership in an epic battle against AJAX at Sandringham on Sunday. After not being able to field a team in 2012, the club has risen on the back of a group of young men who have taken on the many challenges to get the junior ranks of the club back on track. The appointment of Jeremy Freeman as coach was instrumental in making this happen and everyone associated with the team was duly rewarded on Sunday.
After starting the season slowly but then building momentum to finish in 4th place, the squad then took on their mantra of ‘anyone, anytime, anywhere’ and carried it through a tough finals series with wins over Williamstown CYMS and Northern Blues to make the Grand Final and face a polished AJAX. Anyone who witnessed the game would not have been disappointed – a classic battle with scores locked at half time and again at full time. During extra time and the Friars boys showed greater composure to win by 8 points. Before holding the Premiership cup up with Coach Freeman, the captain, Mitchell Malt received the medal for Best on Ground as voted by the umpires.
The future is looking very bright at the Friars!
