The 2013 Preliminary Final brought down the curtain on the season for the Werribee Tigers and it also was the final game in the VFL career of Captain Robbie Castello.
After 169 games and 179 goals, “Berto” is retiring as a VFL player.
He will be remembered for his enormous contribution as a player which included
- 169 games (Werribee Games Record Holder)
- 2006 Best & Fairest
- Club Captain (2012 & 2013)
- 179 goals
- 2011 VFL Team of the Year
- Assistant Midfield Coach 2013
- Inaugural Community Development Officer
Senior Coach Scott West paid tribute to the popular number 23: “Robbie’s just been an ornament to the footy club. To stick around for 10 years and 169 games is a credit to him. It’s a credit to the person he is, and the family that he’s got.”
President John Nicol agreed: “You could not find a better club person than Robbie. It has been tremendous to watch him grow as a footballer and as a fine young man over the last decade. His mother and father, Maria and Vince, have a delightful family and I am happy to say they have become part of the Werribee Football Club family and always will be. I want to wish Robbie and his wife Laura all the best for the future. The Castello name is now part of our history and I hope will also be part of our future.”
Robbie will not be lost to football though: “I still want to have a kick but I want to explore some coaching options as well. I want to spend more time with Laura and the family. I have had the best time at the club in my 10 years. We unfortunately did not achieve a premiership but I have made some lifelong friends and really enjoyed playing footy at Avalon Airport Oval. The Werribee Football Club has given me many opportunities on and off the field and I am very grateful for that. This club will always be a big part of my life. Who knows what might happen in the future?”
