Club President Peter Bromley said “The scholarship will serve to provide encouragement and support to a deserving candidate and ensure that success through the spirit of Port Melbourne and its football club”. Port Melbourne Football Club, which was founded in 1874, is an important part of the Port Melbourne community with many local residents having played for and continuing to support the club.
The scholarship, with a value of $2,000, will be awarded annually to an up and coming young sportsperson and will serve to provide encouragement and support to the deserving candidate. It will assist the successful applicant to progress their sporting career and cover such costs as attendance at an event(s), travel, accommodation, training/coaching, equipment, etc.
Mr Bromley said “Applications will be called in early October 2013 with the successful candidate to be announced at our first home game in April 2014”.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate a high degree of dedication and determination in the pursuit of excellence in their chosen sport; the challenges that have been or are currently being faced by the applicant in the pursuit of their chosen sport and strong sporting performance.
“Who knows maybe it will help produce the next Cathy Freeman, Andrew Gaze, Bianca Chatfield or Sam Dwyer” said Mr Bromley.
