It was slightly overcast at Henson Park, although no real threat of rain, on Sunday. First semi-final day, and a sudden death encounter against Pennant Hills.
A low-scoring opening saw the ball travel from end to end for 12 minutes with no goals scored. The Demons broke the deadlock before Daniel Schacher landed a quick reply. It wasn't looking good when the Demons led three goals to one with the clock ticking into time-on. But three quick goals, including a sensational snap from the sideline by Jack Davis, gave the Bombers the lead at the first change.
It was a see-sawing battle of changing momentum through a high-scoring and entertaining second term. It was firey early, and there were frequent lead changes as two evenly-matched sides wrestled for the advantage. But it was the Bombers who emerged with the lead at the long break, holding a narrow two-point margin.
The Bombers took the upper hand in the third quarter, with a run of four goals to two. Our defence was magnificent, smothering, pressuring and snuffing out Demon attacking raids with regularity; Ryan Meldrum standing out with a smother to prevent a certain Demon goal from the square. And when Brendan Fitzgerald took the ball after a free kick and advantage was paid, the Bombers opened up a 14-point lead at the last change.
But the Bombers had slowed to a walk when the last quarter started, and within a few minutes the Demons had taken the lead. The Bombers regained the advantage, but the momentum had turned and the scores were deadlocked for several minutes before the Demons kicked the goal that would break our hearts and end our season.
It had been a brave & determined effort by a side decimated by injuries, but Lady Luck wasn't smiling on us; and so our season draws to an end.
