This weekend, the Macquarie University Warriors play off in the Division 2 Grand Final of the Sydney AFL Women’s competition. And whilst their road to the last game of the season has been nothing short of spectacular, it counts for nothing if the girls can’t bring home the bacon on the day.
For it is not just the 22 players and coach who will be praying for a win on the weekend, the Women’s team carry the hopes of the entire club with it when they cross that boundary line at 12pm Sunday.
Not since the green & gold’s season in 2009 has our club tasted success at the highest level. I was there that day and can honestly say it was one of the best days I’ve been involved with at this club. Everyone was there, from the silver kookas who played in the 1999, 2000, & 2001 Grand Finals, to the under 18’s who had only just recently become a part of the club. People from the club wore guernseys, club shirts, training singlets, caps and even footy trip t-shirts – anything that they could get their hands on to let the opposition know who they were there to support. Nathan Jackson even attended as our official club mascot, sporting a kilt, sporran, and not much else! Hecklers could be heard in the stands from the other side of the ground, and those who weren’t sticking close to the bar were crammed behind the goals following the forward line from end to end as the quarters ticked over.
On that day we were a club united, and this Sunday we have a chance prove once again that Macquarie knows how to turn it on! So this Sunday, don’t spend the day in bed, don’t make excuses, don’t think, just DO! DO support the girls, DO wear your club kit, DO bring a mate, DO shout at the top of your lungs, and DO have a bloody good time!
The chance to play in a grand final doesn’t come along all that often as many of us know, so when we get the chance we bloody well might as well make the most of it.
See you Sunday,
Marshy
