UNDER 16 GOLD REPORT
The final margin of 47 points in our favour gave lie to how tough this match was. For three quarters South Melbourne refused to go away. The game was played in extremely blustery conditions which resulted in constant stoppages and players from both sides consistently putting their bodies on the line. Goals were at a premium and the importance of giving 100% for every second of every quarter was reflected in the fact that in the second and third quarters we were able to kick goals with only seconds to play on the clock. A combined total of three goals was scored in the first half and our goal just before half time saw us lead 18 to 10 at the long break. Deep into the third quarter we held a slender four point lead which lead became ten points right on three quarter time. Although we were kicking with the wind in the last, we knew that the wind alone wouldn’t get us over the line and we were really mindful of our goalless quarter the week before in our disappointing second semi final loss to Mordialloc. So, with a slender ten point lead (30 to 20) at three quarter time, we knew that this match was well and truly still up for grabs. The boys then put in what can only be described as a completely dominant last quarter in which we kicked seven goals to one. If the boys continue this type of footy we will beat Mordialloc and win the flag next week. Next week will be our fifth game against Mordi this year and apart from last week’s aberration, nothing separates the two teams. Whoever wins this game will deservedly be the Division 1 Premiers. Let’s all get behind the boys and give them all the support of the mighty Beena community.
