The finals are not far away, and there was a sense of spring in the air on Saturday. The sun shining, not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature set to move well into the 20s. Gore Hill Oval was looking a treat for another day of footy.
First up, Div 4 were in action, taking on Holroyd-Parramatta. The Div 4 team have kept working hard, on and off the field, this season; even though results haven't often gone their way. They started brightly against the Goannas, getting the first goal of the game. But that would be their only score of the quarter, and they trailed by 22 points at the first change. And despite a late fightback in the second quarter, the deficit was out to 29 points at half time. The Bombers kept working through the second half, but were unable to prevent a 78-point loss.
Next on were the Under 18s, their opponents Sydney Uni. The first quarter saw both sides miss scoring chances, with the Bombers holding a 5-point quarter time lead. And with the first two goals of the second term, the lead was out to 16 points and looking good. But the Students bounced back late, and a Sydney Uni goal seconds before the half time siren saw the Bombers trail by 3 points at the long break.
The Bombers took the upper hand in the third quarter, finding room to move and run and marking options on the forward line. The run of play was going our way as the Bombers took the lead and kept going to take a 13-point lead to three quarter time. The momentum had swung to the Bombers and they could do no wrong in the last quarter, playing some of their best football for the year to round out a well-earned 21-point win.
Then it was time for the Premier Division fixture. Jake Monk got the Bombers on the board early, but much of the first quarter was a low-scoring arm wrestle, with the scores still locked at one goal apiece deep in time-on. But it was the Bombers who broke the deadlock with two late goals to go 13 points ahead at quarter time. And the second term was a procession. The midfield dominated, and Danny Roberts was looking dangerous up forward. The first seven goals of the quarter, with the Students not even getting an inside-50 until the 20 minute mark, was a reflection of the North Shore domination as they raced to a convincing 54-point lead at the long break.
The third quarter was lower scoring, as the Bombers had the better of play around the ground but were unable to get the reward on the scoreboard to show for it. But the floodgates opened in the last quarter as the Bombers raced through six goals for the term to end up with a convincing 84-point victory.
The win keeps the Bombers in the top three, and the double-chance destiny for the finals remains in our hands.
