It’s been another long break since we have had footy at the Burr but today we welcome Tantanoola to the ‘Mick & Jean Walker Oval’. We also welcome our sponsors and the people responsible for creating the magnificent new facility on ‘Can Hill’.
Today is sponsors day and the official opening of ‘Can Hill’ and we get the chance to thank those who support our club and those who have done such an amazing job to create the new A CLASS facility at ‘Can Hill’.
Lots of people have worked hard to make this new development a reality but Drew and the boys at Blackbird Industries must be singled out and thanked because without them this would have been neither possible or affordable , so as you see the Blackbird lads today get around them and give them a pat on the back for a sensational effort.
Back to the footy and a couple of weeks ago we travelled to Glencoe for what turned out to be a pretty good day for the Burr Boys. We kicked off with the MINI MOZZIES and once again Justin had a great turnout of young Mozzies very keen to have a kick. I believe he had over 20 players turn up and it is fantastic to see such enthusiasm and support for our game at this level. It is vitally important for the young Mozzies to get good guidance and coaching and we could not have a better man than Justin at the helm who should be commended for his effort and the passing on of his knowledge to the young Mozzie lads and lasses.
The Junior Colts game was played in two halves, our first half was well below the standard of play we are used too, handing over our top players to help Glencoe. The coaches wanted to see how the Burr Boys could handle the pressure and Cory and Eddie played superbly for Glencoe, with Cory kicking their first goal. Lachy kicked our only goal until halftime and joined Darcy over at the Murphies in the second.
Glencoe took control of the game and we found ourselves behind at half time. After a spray from Ashley and Ray the Burr Boys took control in the second half, with Brett and Connor C at Glencoe our boys started to play the footy we know they can. The senior boys started to give the ball to the youngest of the team to get them into the game, with Jack M and James playing great footy. The last quarter saw Ben and Connor W go over to Glencoe. Darcy made a high flying mark and booted 5 goals, this earning him best player. We also saw young Mitch score his first goal in green and gold. Better players: Darcy, Rhys, James, Connor C, Cory and Lachlan.
The SENIOR COLTS took on an undermanned Murphies side missing players due to injury and unavailability. With the help of the majority of Burr colts playing for the opposition during the game the boys had a good hit out with the match not being too much of a one sided affair. In trying conditions both teams attacked the ball hard and a win didn’t come too easily. All players contributed on the day and it’s good to see our first year colts such as Dylan V, Brodie H, Tommy H, Benny B, Jessie R, Bailey C and Jacob G really starting to make an impact on games. Thanks to all the lads who put on a Glencoe jumper your effort and commitment is certainly appreciated.
The Reserves although not succesfull had a much better game and were very competitive for all four quarters. Several colts stepped up again to help Scotty out and young Hayden didn’t take a backwards step when one of the biggest opposition players thought he would have a go at a 15 year old. The big Glencoe number 60 copped a fair spray from the Mt Burr bench and supporters and one would hope he copped the same from his own. Well done Robski who FINALLY played his 50th.
The A grade had a good win last week in an important game which would determine where we finish at the end of the minor round. Glencoe had the better start and were able to score freely with not much pressure put on them. After some stern words at quarter time the team responded with an eight goal 2nd quarter winning the contested ball and being direct into the forward line with the forwards making good use of the entries. With wet weather in the second half the aim of both teams was just to keep the ball moving forward and put pressure on to create scoring opportunities and we were able to do that a few more times than our opponents to come out in front at the final siren, it was a good effort by the team especially after quarter time.
It is a busy time at the Burr with some important upcoming events.
