Time denied the Campbelltown Blues victory against the Pennant Hills Demons on the weekend. In their efforts to continue their recent winning streak, players were left devastated after coming agonisingly close to a win that would put the competition on notice. When the final siren rang the Blues were less than one straight kick behind, the ball was deep inside the Campbelltown forward line and the Blues were full of running.
In a sign of just how far this team has come this season, the Blues fought back after a slow start when they were jumped in the first quarter by their more fancied opponents and were down by 4 goals. From this point the game became a titanic struggle played with a finals like intensity. Penni Mahina and James Bottin-Noonan played vital roles for the Blues with their rock solid defence inspiring their team mates. The reputation of the Campbelltown midfield continues to grow and strong performances from Hamish Sherwood, Bryce Joynson and Taran Etto enhanced this perception. Matthew Morey made a welcome return to the side after injury and youngster Paul Green's speed around the ground caused the Pennant Hills demons headaches all day. Josh Van Luenen tried desperately to get his team over the line as did Cameron Desmond who courageously returned to the field after a severe collision during the game. Veteran Matthew Withers battled hard all day under injury duress and Campbelltown's two leaders Matthew Edwin's and David Linsen once again did everything in their power to lift their team to victory.
While falling agonisingly short on this occasion, the Campbelltown Blues earnt plenty of respect and look set to create headaches for their opposition teams in the lead up to the finals
