Campbelltown Reserve Grade took on the 3rd placed Randwick City Saints in what all pundits thought would be a cake walk. Campbelltown were coming into the game following two heavy losses in a row and looked to be heading for another tough day with only 2 Players on the bench.
The first quarter went to script with Randwick Dominating possession and clearances and with multiple entries inside 50 they managed to kick away, to lead early. Campbelltown Managed a late 1st quarter goal Through Fretwell to stem the early onslaught. At Quarter time Randwick Lead 3.4.22 to Campbelltown 1.1 .7
The Second Quarter saw Campbelltown Regain some control and with several long passages Campbelltown kept possession and this frustrated Randwick. Brilliant ruck work from Fraser and Good control from backman Harry along with Jordo Lurking wide with Smith chiming in saw Campbelltown take the upper hand in the 2nd Quarter outscoring Randwick 14 points to 13 leaving the halftime score reading Randwick 5.5 35 to Campbelltown 3.3 . 21 at the main break.
The third quarter is often referred to as the premiership quarter and if Campbelltown were to have any chance they had to hold firm, and not only did they do that, they outscored Randwick 19 points to 12 to yet again narrow Randwick’s advantage.
It’s often said hard work pays off and this certainly was the case when the wolf Pack leader ALLAN (David Perse) kicked his first goal of the season. What followed had to be seen to be believed the longest goal celebration known to man, one that wouldn't have been mistaken in the Premier League, was taking place as ALLAN ran 150m back to the bench to the cheers of the crowd. The lead up to the goal was brilliant ALLAN lead to the footy took a contested mark 45 from goal only to have the player on the mark overstep and AL had himself a 50 m penalty. And the rest as they say is History with one fine strike of the footy ALLAN had his first goal of the year and Campbelltown Reserves were heading to one, most unlikely of victories.
The Fourth Quarter had it all Randwick were falling apart squabbling and inter issues had them reeling what they thought would be a walk over was slowly becoming a nightmare as an understrenght Campbelltown reserves pushed onto to what was an improbable victory. With the scores now at 47- 40 Campbelltown were in it to their eyeballs. In what was a tight tussle in the fourth, Campbelltown fought all the way, 2 Goals to Chaise in his last game and a Booming 50m goal form Clint had the locals up and cheering. AT one stage in the final term Campbelltown lead by 1 point. In the end Campbelltown Kicked 9 Goals 6 to Randwick’s 8 Goals 15 which left Campbelltown 3 points short of victory. But with a two man bench and out scoring Randwick in terms of Majors it was a win to Campbelltown. Everyone at the ground felt the Reserves had won and this was acknowledged by Randwick as they refrained from singing their song as both teams knew the better team lost on the day. It’s rare to say the losing team won but on this day, such was the case.
Campbelltown now have 4 remaining winnable games vs Wests, Norwest, Southern Power and Penrith to end the season.
