1st Grade Match Report: Rd 9 vs St George
Vital Win Narrowly Eludes Blues
Season 2013 is proving to be an extremely close competition in the Sydney Premier League.
Against St George on the weekend, the much improved Blues were once again thwarted in their attempts to earn a vital win and stay in the race for the finals.
Despite the gallant efforts of 21st Birthday Boy Bryce Joynson, Taran Etto and David Linsen in the mid field, the Blues were unable to maintain their three quarter time lead and hold out an equally desperate St George in the last quarter while kicking against a strong wind.
Penni Mahina was miserly in defence limiting St George’s key Full Forward Nick Ryan to only a handful of opportunities. He was well supported by Kyle Sommerville, James Bottin Noonan and Mitch Hogan.
Up forward, Hamish Sherwood, Josh Van Luenen and Theo asked plenty of questions of the St George defence and were a constant threat.
Coach Neil Brunton was left lamenting another close loss but was philosophical after the game, “It is clear that we have improved considerably this season but at this level we will not be given an arm chair ride. We have to earn every victory. To do this we must stick tight, keep things in perspective and remain focused on the areas we need to improve. It’s important we do not get preoccupied with the result but concentrate on getting better in our key areas. Long term, this young team is heading in the right direction.”
