We’re on the road this week. The Under 18s have the bye, while our other teams are split far and wide. Bombers here, there and everywhere.
This Weekend’s Matches
Saturday 2:10pm – Division One v Macquarie Uni at Macquarie Uni Oval
Saturday 4:45pm – Division Four v Manly at Weldon Oval
Sunday 2:10pm – Premier Division v Wests at Picken Oval
Under 18s – Bye
Picken Oval
Picken Oval is on Hampton St, Croydon Park, next door to the Magpie Sports Club.
To get there, cross the Harbour Bridge. Take the Western Distributor across Anzac Bridge, and keep going straight ahead along City West Link.
Go straight ahead past Parramatta Road. The traffic may be heavy along this stretch of road, so allow plenty of travel time. Go straight ahead at Liverpool Road, and get in the right lane.
Turn right at the lights to Georges River Road. Go straight ahead at the Brighton Ave (Campsie) turnoff, through the shopping centre; and take the third street on the left after the lights, into Hampton St. The street sign on the corner has a sign pointing to Western Suburbs Australian Football Club.
When you see the licensed club, the oval is behind it. There is some parking on site at the ground, but not a lot; if you can’t fit in there, there’s plenty of on-street parking nearby.
To get there by public transport, catch the train to Burwood; then catch the Sydney Buses 492 bus. This runs along Brighton Ave. Get off just before the Cooks River bridge; and the ground is visible from there.
Macquarie University Oval
Macquarie Uni Oval is at the eastern edge of the uni campus, at the end of Culloden Rd, North Ryde.
To get there from Gore Hill, head north along Pacific Highway and take the Longueville Rd exit. Go straight ahead along Epping Rd. Take the Lane Cove Rd exit, and turn right and get in the left lane.
Turn left at Talavera Rd. Keep going past Macquarie Centre shops, and you’ll notice the M2 on your right. After the shops, take the second bridge on your right onto Culloden Rd. Over the bridge is the car park.
There are frequent buses to Macquarie Shopping Centre, plus the train to Macquarie University Station; both of which are walking distance from the ground.
There are two ovals with AFL goalposts in the uni sporting complex, and both will be hosting AFL Sydney matches on the day. We are on the main oval, which has steep grass hills around the wings and behind the goals at one end.
Weldon Oval
Weldon Oval is on Stirgess Ave at Curl Curl.
To get there, follow Millitary Rd and left over Spit Bridge. Keep going straight ahead past the Manly turnoff, follow Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation and straight ahead along Pittwater Road. When you pass Brookvale Oval, get in the right lane.
Turn right at Harbord Road. When you pass parkland on your left, take the next left turn on to Brighton St then the next left onto Bennett St. Turn left at the bowling club onto Stirgess Ave, the road swings round to the right; and Weldon Oval will then come up on the left. There’s plenty of on-street parking.
To get there by public transport, the Sydney Buses 136 route from Chatswood to Manly and the 139 bus from Warringah Mall to Manly go to nearby Adams St. Get off the bus at the corner of Adams and Park St, walk a block north to Stirgess Ave.

Match Preview
Our heartbreaking loss to Campbelltown last week sees the Bombers drop to third on the ladder; but we’re still only a win off top spot. A horrific injury toll, with several players that would normally have been regulars in Premier Division forced to the sidelines, has played havoc with the form that was on display early in the season.
But there’s still plenty of quality in the North Shore lineup, and it’s time to fight back. Although the Magpies are a much improved side this year, the Bombers had a win over Wests when we played them early in the season at Gore Hill. With our backs to the wall, we’ll come out fighting to regain the winning momentum.
