Under 16 Schoolgirls - Victoria State Team
Mia Amon
The Victorian U/16 schoolgirls AFL team is heading to Darwin for the national School Sports Championships from August 10-16 2013. Mia Amon is one of only 12 girls from all of metro Melbourne in the team that will be defending their title won in 2012. (The other half of the team is made up of girls from country Victoria). She is the only East Malvern girls to make the team however Niamh Clarke was very close having made it to the final trial match in the selection process that involved a tryout of over 60 girls from which 40 were chosen for a trail match to help guide the selection of the final squad of 25. The team covers girls from all over Victoria and have been training at the Caulfield Grammar facilities at Wheelers Hill.
While this is an amazing achievement for Mia, Darwin is expensive and costs are high so she needs approximately $2,500 for her travel, accommodation, uniforms & other costs. We're seeking donations to cover some of this amount.
Mia has had a stellar year in 2013 having earlier represented Metro Victoria in the team that won the Under 18 National Youth Girls title in Shepparton in May. She is a part of the Sandringham Dragons Youth Girls Academy, is co captain of the Yarra Junior Football League team currently competing in the AFL Metro Junior Championships (she was awarded best on ground in their recent match against Northern Football League with a 5 goal performance which helped Yarra make the grand final to be held on June 22 at Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham). She is also a leading player in the currently undefeated East Malvern Youth Girls team!
Mia has been following her footy dream since starting in the under 9's at St Kilda City Junior Footy club where she twice won the 3rd best and fairest in mostly boys teams.
In 2012 Mia joined East Malvern in their Under 18 Yarra Junior Football League Youth Girls competition and at 14-15 years of age came 2nd in the goal kicking for the whole competition and also won 2nd best & fairest for her club.
Richard Amon our U18 Youth Girls coach and Father of Mia has created a fundraising page http://teambus.com.au/miafooty to help raise some of the costs to get Mia to Darwin. There's a number of quirky rewards available for those who donate to the cause (such as Mia sending you a postcard or a tacky souvenir from Darwin!) and there's also an interesting video we've made of Mia's footy journey on the campaign page so please check it out, spread the message and help out if you can!
